Alright, anons. I'm back with more infos about TigerDirect closing and what will be happening.

>What exactly is happening
TigerDirect is closing 31 out of its 34 retail stores within the month and will be having closeout sales at all affected stores.

>What will be for sale?
Pretty much everything, as far as I know we will be selling everything including the shelves on the final days.

>Which stores are staying open?
Flagler in Miami, Jefferson in Georgia, and the Puerto Rico store are staying open. All other stores will be closing.

>Why?
The official statement from corporate said something along the lines of the retail stores not being profitable enough. The company will be concentrating on its online and B2B business only.

Feel free to ask me any questions.

I live 8mins away from the PR store and it's like a ghost town every time I go there. I'm surprised it's not gonna close. It's been like that since it opened. Usually more employees than customers.

Also, RIP RadioShack.

Are electronics stores just dying all of a sudden?

>Are electronics stores dying off?

They are, but it's not because of lack of demand. Both this and RadioShack closing can be blamed on companies that don't listen to their salespeople about customer demands and wanted items.
>>
>>46972535
Radio shack did it to themselves between shit employees and focusing on cell phones/tablets rather than what people went to radio shack for.

I went there to buy a phone I knew was in stock because I was there 2 days before. When I went in to buy it the sales person swore they didn't even sell phones for that carrier, despite the fact they had a whole shelf dedicated to them.

Or when I went in looking for a replacement 3.5mm audio plug that was $5 and the sales person swore I'd be better off buying a $200 pair of beats.

Pretty good, and don't wait expecting it to be there the next day. Shit will probably go fast once everyone in the area finds out what is happening.
>>
>Saw this thread the other day
>Google for nearby stores
>There's one an hour away from me

Time to go for a drive this weekend then. I'm not sure if there's anything I need, but I suppose if I find something cheap enough..
>>
>>46973613
It is worth noting we have not had any price increases in my store leading up to this, but I'm not sure what things will be after all the tags are changed.
>>
>>46973660
When Gordon Brothers comes in, they will have you start raising the prices on goods so they can claim discounts on the raised prices. They will keep you on through the liquidation to continue selling.
>Several clerks explained that the liquidators come in before a going-out-of-business sale and raise many prices up to the regular selling price. Then they discount from there, starting with small percentages off and deepening the discounts as the sale goes on.
>"We had [the] best deals before," a clerk told us. "Now, 20 percent, 10 percent, it's nothing."
>Raising prices before lowering them again can result in some odd situations. We found a curtain that the liquidator priced at $79.99 minus 40 percent, so we paid $47.99 for it, which seemed pretty good. But when Linens 'n Things had that same curtain on clearance, we could have gotten it for $19.99, according to the hidden price tag. "Contrary to popular belief, liquidation sales aren't a great deal for the consumer," said retail industry analyst Stephen Baker of the NPD Group. "The liquidator is there to make money."

Gordon Brothers is no stranger to this, and they will lead your liquidation.
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/tigerdirect-closing-all-retail-stores,28731.html
>“These actions will include the exit of substantially all retail store operations; closing a distribution center; and implementing a general workforce reduction to realign our resources solely with our B2B focus. We have engaged Gordon Brothers to assist with the retail store process and anticipate that all of these actions will be completed by the end of the second quarter."
>>
>>46973613

This. Do your research beforehand or double check prices on a smartphone or whatever. I remember going into the Circuit City clearance and shit was exactly the same price.
>>
>>46973613
When I worked at kohls I'd laugh at how alot of times clearance prices were higher than the regular sale price. But people would buy them up quick as fuck because "omg clearance" when it was actually cheaper for the past 2 months and no one even looked at it.

I don't know how often people would skip buying something because "it'll be cheaper on black Friday" and the black Friday sale was gonna be like 25 cents cheaper
>>

Talk to the guys in the isle first, though if you ask for too much they may need to talk to a manger.

>>
>>46974678
Well I'm pretty sure the 4k screens and the 2011v3s and mobos/ram will be gone quick.

If I can't get a steal on that I'm at least hopeing to get a newer GPU for about 30-40% off normal pricing. Hell even a 970 at 200$ is a steal.

Whatcha think I can grab for the best discount? Or should I say fuck it and go 1150 or AMD?

Are you the same one who posted this on Reddit?
>>
>>46974707

Depends on the item and how much margin it originally had, though I am sure some things will be quite cheap.
>>
>>46972398
>We are pretty much the only computer parts store in the state, I think a lot of people are going to care.

Count me in on the care side. Too far away to take advantage of deals. But realizing that your pics in this thread may be the last/best archive of the chain's retail existence. Stuff like that never gets pictures taken of it unless they're PR photos for ads that all go away. Someday when the last brick and mortar closes or is bought out by Amazon and turned into a retail warehouse, people will remember Rat Shack's junior brother Tiger Direct.
>>
>>46974738

Well 16 gb ddr (4x4gb) goes for about 140 on newegg. Cheap 2011v3 mobo is about 170-240. 28 lane 2011v3 CPU starts at 580. left over for a GPU leaves about 200 ish.

Thats about 1k ish. Think I can get a deal for cheaper in store tomorrow?

That I will agree on. I bought a nighthawk from you guys and got 20% off it as well. Now it runs my whole damn condo here in Altamonte Springs.

Personally, I only ever shop at TG when I bring friends who need shit and dont wanna ship it from online, or when I need something I can't get on the internet. Its really more of a convenience to me to drive down the street on my way home from work. Than again, I am going there to try and nab a fucking 1k gaming system for 500-600 $ lol ...
>>
Stopped by one of the local TDs today and gave my business card to the business account manager there, he says he'll still be able to order for business accounts in the future. I guess he'll keep his job and work from home or something.

Sure hope the prices don't get jacked up artificially before discounts. I'll go by again tomorrow and probably spend most of my day there.
>>
>>46974971
Of course, Apple sells prebuilt garbage to plebs. TD tries to sell parts to educated consumers who generally know how to use PCPartPicker.
>>
>>46973660
>but I'm not sure what things will be after all the tags are changed.
Forty percent higher. Those "liquidators" are really good at this. If your store works anything like most retail establishments they do not even have to go there to fix the prices.
>>
>>46975070
Depends on the store, everyone in the Raleigh store (where I work) is pretty chill, we ask you if you want help, and if you say no we let you be and maybe check on you every ten minutes or so. We also have managers riding us about not letting customers browse the store unattended, mainly because of theft. Don't take it personal.

Of course sometimes you get that customer that you didn't ask, who goes and complains to a manager that no one spoke to them. Damned if you do and damned if you don't.
>>

>>
>>46975129
>A solid hour
God damn, that's excessive. I just asked and if you said no I let it go, MAYBE push it a bit if you are buying a prebuilt laptop or desktop. But an hour is fucking retarded, that's a waste of MY time as well as yours.
>>
>>46975129
Yea, it doesnt happen to me often. The Cherokee genes I inherited give me a really mean facial look. Sucks too because I try to be really nice to everyone lol.

Most of the time when im in Altamonte no one bothers me unless I look over at an employee, than they come right over and ask if I need help.

Decent store, managers for the most part were ok with the exception of 2. The girls in that store are pretty air headed when it comes to tech or tech based questions, usually just pawn you off to someone else, but damn if they dont try to sell you some "Anti Virus to protect your home network and all your music files".

Bitch, you aint even in the right castle.

Yes, believe it or not. A lot of people like the idea of there being an actual store you can return shit to instead of having to deal with RMA'ing something, not to mention having staff you can talk to for advice and stuff.

I'm not just going for the monitors I'll be buying a whole rig. What I don't understand is why have a sale when you have an online site you can sell the unsold items on?

They're gonna try to push out shit they can't push to B2B. The rest will just be shipped to the warehouses.
>>
>>46975500
Because shipping things back to the warehouse would cost more than what the margin on the item is. There is over $1.5 million worth of inventory in my store alone.
>>
Is this really happening? My store is located in McAllen Texas and its the only place I can go to for parts. I don't like ordering online and I don't mind paying a little extra if it means less hassle. If I'm lucky, its one of the few locations that will be spared although I doubt it...
>>
>>46975547

Damn. I live like 5 minutes from a TD, might go check it out tomorrow to see what's up. They really need to step it up, I went there a few months ago and they were very behind all with all of the new hardware. It's not really surprising they're bailing out.
>>
>>46975567
Not only are they behind in hardware, they are also bloating prices. HDDs are stupidly expensive compared to online retailers.

I was there just yesterday, bra. Was hoping to see if they had any tech positions open. The store is nice (hadn't been there in like 8 years), but it's dead as fuck now. Certainly had the air of a dying store.

>>
>>46976605
>terrible management
>43 stores closing

Nah, couldnt be.
>>
>>46976605
It varies from store to store and management in a particular store has a lot to do with it. The Raleigh store is the best, most chill job I have ever had, we literally just talk to people, answer questions, and sell them Mcafee and SquareTrade. It's commission based, but if you know how to talk to people and don't act like a sperglord you can make (or could) $20 an hour easily.
>>
>>46976652
I'm just fucking wondering now how much I'd be making if Best Buy paid commission. I regularly average out at least $750 revenue per hour every months.

You have no idea how many customers have asked me if I got paid commission after tending to them, and then said "well, that's a shame" after saying I don't.
>>
>>46976710
>$750 revenue per hour every months.
And you get minimum wage on that?

Holy shit
>>
I didn't even know Tigerdirect had physical stores.
>>
>>46976710
Yeah. A lot of people don't seem to like commission based sales clerks, though. I always tried to not be a pushy jerk about things. If you didn't want it I would just ask one more time at the checkout and then let you be on your way. The only time I would really push something was if I felt the customer actually needed it, for example if someone who kept getting viruses was buying a new computer and wouldn't buy any AV with it, or if someone was getting a tablet for their kid and they didn't want to get SquareTrade accidental on it.
>>
i have never seen a whole aisle full of motherboards.

wow.

i have to drive 50 miles just to get to a worst buy.

no wonder online sales are the only way to get computer parts, nobody actually fucking stocks them in a store!

jefferson GA? one fucking store in the entire state? well fuck them too then. newegg and amazon are only a click and 3-5 days away.

i'd rather pay a bit more and actually get it in a store but with no stores nearby fuck it.
>>
>>46976743
$9.10, actually. But the rest of my department as a whole isn't far from that, and most of them earn below $8.75. In fact, our typical revenue per hour goal is usually around $610, and we're the only department that not only exceeds it, but fucking shatters it. Some of my (part-time, admittedly) coworkers sometimes manage over a grand. We pretty much carry the store.

With how little they pay and how they tend to short-staff us, I can imagine the managers rubbing their hands together everytime we finish the day.

Would it be "safe" to walk into a store and ask them when they're having their close out sale if it isn't clearly displayed? Will employees answer that question in the store or is this insider stuff that nobody is supposed to know?

I certainly wouldn't mind dropping a few hundred dollars on things that are discounted greatly. What are some things expected to be sold for? Anything more than 50%?

this makes me sad...

TD should have just focused most of its efforts on its online business and just making all that run smoother. If they used Set up some program where their retail stores are all converted into big showrooms for people to try out stuff TD is selling on their website (maybe hold a very small inventory of shit). Hire a handful of actually *talented* salespeople and let the customer bargain with them as they preview so that they always buy, they always think they're getting a deal, and they always come back .

BTW If you need a business consultant, you know where to find me

>Would it be "safe" to walk into a store and ask them when they're having their close out sale if it isn't clearly displayed?

They may not even know they are closing if it isn't advertised. Corporate policy is not to tell people so the store doesn't turn to shit. When I was working at 7 eleven people knew we were closing 6 months before it happened. Corporate and other higher ups wouldn't acknowledge it until about 2 weeks before it happened. Hell even people that worked at other 7 elevens knew before we did.

On one hand I am sad, but on the other it is a forgone conclusion that retail stores cannot compete with the price of online. Overhead of stock, employees, space, etc are more expensive than a warehouse and shipping.

Progress will progress, nothing can stop it.

Yeah, very true.

Though it makes me wonder, how will these stores closing affect the jobs market? How will it affect customers like the ones I am sure will be extremely upset that the only computer parts store in the state that actually has stock of anything worthwhile, is closing?

Damnit! I just bought tons of parts.

Well, maybe the 980 for my SLI will go on a ridiculous sale..

Oh no doubt, there will always (sitation needed hard to say) be a market for physical sales.

But ultimately people that I know tend to prefer a cheaper price when available. And why spend money on gas when amazon prime.tm is free shipping?

Not saying I always do but many think this way.

May we live in interesting times.
>>
>>46978313
considering alot of physical stores around are super under-staffed with stressed out employees working at them it might just be better this way
>>
>>46978340
Damn bro, that sucks.

Yeah...

A lot of old farts around here buy from physical stores still. Most of my customers are over 50.

It sucks, but then again I probably shouldn't be complaining as you are an employee and all.

Sorry mate.

It's cool bro, I started this thread to discuss the topic, and discuss the topic we will!

Though I do need sleep, it's 3 am.

I never knew they had retail stores, makes sense though because theres 2 Frys and a Micro Center within a 20 minute drive of me. Not to mention the Newegg will call pickup is 15 min away lol.

sorry to hear about your company OP
>>
>>46976829
Well to be fair with Target they were just really fucking retarded about it.

>CANDIANS WILL TOTALLY BUY AS MUCH AS AMERICANS DO DESPITE MUCH LOWER POPULATION DENSITY AND POPULATION OVERALL
>DISTRIBUTION AND WAREHOUSING? WE'LL WORRY ABOUT THAT SHIT -AFTER- WE OPEN UP ALL THE STORES!
>>

>Sorry
Much appreciated anon. I wish we had other computer stores in my area. If anyone in the Raleigh area is looking for experienced computer sales and repair staff, you will have about 20 people looking for jobs in that field.
