so what's the use in a smaller desktop if you don't live in a cupboard?
>>
>>46813120
looks cute
>>
>>46813120
The only use is that it takes less space and is easier to move around if go to LAN parties a lot.
>>
>>46813164
a smaller case doesn't enable any different kinds of transport, and it wouldn't really be any lighter, since you're just packing in the same components into a smaller space

something like a laptop with an egpu can enable different kinds, since that complete setup could be carried in a bag (including the screen/keyboard, which is built in, and a mouse), but a smaller desktop case doesn't change much in this regard
>>
>>46813181

Smaller footprint ,less space taken, aesthetic, can fit into a sports bag and carried as such.

Its more of a "why do you need a big one".
I kind of just changed down after I realized that I've been buying midtowers and make no use of the space.

I'll change up to mATX next when I need 2x gpus.
>>
>>46813120

>>
>>46813181
>a smaller case doesn't enable any different kinds of transport
It's much easier to lift.
>and it wouldn't really be any lighter, since you're just packing in the same components into a smaller space
A full tower weighs a lot even without the components.
>>
>>46813197
>I kind of just changed down after I realized that I've been buying midtowers and make no use of the space.
You should be velcroing hard drives to every surface.
>>
>>46813226

Its funny because I do like having a lot of HDDs and went for the Node 304 since I can fit 4 3.5"s into it.

Still, the smallest is like 600gb so when I want to add more I'll just replace the small/old ones, or get something external.
>>
>>46813232
why are you so jelly though?
>>
>>46813197
>>46813203
don't get me wrong, i understand there is also no reason for a larger case for many people

all i'm saying is that it also generally doesn't matter how big the case is

in my case i actually do use all the space in a midatx case
>>
>>46813248
go play with your kidbox maybe you'll get some tendies
>>
>>46813250
But saying that a small case is not easier to transport or isn't lighter is just plain wrong.
>>
>>46813243
while it can't be helped sometimes, a small case + external components like hdd's is the dumbest setup imaginable
>>
>tfw my laptop dock takes up more desk space than an itx
>>
>>46813277

Definitely, I'd go for a nas if I actually needed the extra space.

Theres definitely something good about having all of a gaming pc with 7tbs of space and errything else is as big as a shoebox.

my miniITX case (corsair 250d) can hold two ssds and two 3.5" hdds. most miniITX cases hold fullATX sized powersupplies as well.

only thing i would agree with you though about one thing, limited cpu coolers. have to resort to closedcircuit water coolers if you want certain amount cooling cos massive blocks of metal dont fit in 99% of miniITX cases.

Don't remind me, OP.

I still regret buying a fucking ATX full tower and ATX motherboard for my first build. Sure it was my first and was easy to build, but I still have the thing and it takes up way too much fucking space. There's only a GPU in there; the other slots are empty. Not to mention it's already outdated.

like I've said before, it's only mATX and ITX builds for me from now on.
>>

I kind of have a small room to begin with, so the thing sticks out like a sore thumb.

It's also heavy as fuck, so I can't really put it on top of things like I could a smaller, lighter case. I currently have it on its own stand. It just bothers me how I could have gone mATX and there would have been no difference in terms of functionality.

>>46813507
I have a full ATX build but that's mostly because i have several HDD's connected to and also a pair of SSD's for boot and backup. I got like 4TB's of storage space in total from 6 drives. Honestly if i only used 3 HDD's&SDD's i would have happily moved to a mATX build. Also it's surprisingly quiet when in casual usage.

It also used to house two GTX 660 in SLI but i just sold one of them off when the PSU died, and bought a weaker but more reliably PSU from the resale money (late 2012). I really didn't need all that power back then.My only regret is that i didn't wait for a little bit and sell them both off and got a 4GB 760 when it came out.
>>
I did get an ATX case for an upgrade,
but I never got other components because of unexpected financial shit.
I gave it away to someone that needed a case for free

Now I'm looking at a Fractal Design Arc Mini R2, which is mATX

Does anyone ever fill up an EATX?
>>
>>46813636
>Does anyone ever fill up an EATX?
3U/4U servers can. 4x10Gbps NICs, hardware RAID, SAS HBAs, dual sockets, and an assload of RAM will fill up EATX. Hell, you can even stick a GPU or two in there for VDI or buttcoins.
>>
>>46813636
> Does anyone ever fill up an EATX?
Apart from the mainboard, there's nothing extra to "fill up".

[It's not actually going to be bigger than an ATX case, a 4U rackmount ATX will almost always have more stuff inside when completely filled.]

They will as plastic won't passively radiate heat.

In a time long ago, when Aopen cases were everywhere, Lian-Li came along with the promise of better heat transfer, weight reduction and classy looking cases with their Aluminium cases.
They were pricey as shit (You we're looking at ~$300 for a midtower, that's only be around $230 today - economy of scale) but they made the OEM cases of the day look like shit.

Sometimes I miss 2000-2003.

>>
>>46813770
Motherboards and the like don't really have standard (to the mm) placements.

Cases like that have existed though, Zalman used to make a passive case that was basically a giant heatsink box you mounted your gear inside which then had a heatpipe hit to attach your CPU, etc to the case.

Also a good friend of mine gave me a Zalman Z3 plus a while back and i built my lil bro a bretty good desktop.

Is there some massive database of mobo/GPU/case combinations and the lengths required involved in the setup, or do these people do careful measuring with a carpenter square and calculate lengths and hypotenuses then custom order the pipes?

you can simply use a silicon tube to testfit it and ballpark estimate the rest.
shortening the ends is trivial as well

You could do that too, it'd just be a less reliable version of the heatpipe version presented.
>even if you used copper tubing with femules instead of polymer piping with click or compression connectors, you'd still have to work a pump which can fail, as opposed to the passive working nature of heatpipes.

I guess you could make it work on any case if you got a large enough heatsink (look for plate heatsinks on mouser or something) and machined it to work as your case side panel then welded a loop of cooper pipe to the inside or something so it'd transfer heat from the pipe to the sidepanel.

It's never going to be a part you'll be able to buy, no one was interested years ago and it hasn't really changed, but making your own gear is only research away.

If I ever figure out how to not be limited by 16GB ram I'll pick up a Lian Li PC-Q18

4 3.5" HDDs via the HDD cage
2 2.5" SSD removable cage to fit full length dual height video card.

Bottom removable tray fits an assortment of 2.5/3.5" drives, top fan slot fits most AIO water cooling solutions.

Takes standard PSUs.
The 5.25" ODD bay can be reconfigured for things like card readers + slim ODD if you don't want a full size ODD drive.

Basically it's there to allow enough space for the top mounting AIO.

I almost never need to take the computer to the 5.3ghz limit. I'll just keep it at 4.7 no turbo for gaming, let it downclock for /g/, and only crack on the OC when I'm rendering footage or editing.

When buying a case you do - this isn't 2001 anymore, you aren't limited to looks or functionality.

For the price of that case, you could have gotten a much nicer looking case that wouldn't have cooled better to boot
>NZXT is still shit for airflow, even with the H440/S340.

I don't give 2 shits about color coordination crap the neophytes seem to love, but the exterior of the case is something I do care about, especially since it doesn't cost to do so.

When Hagrid came to visit Harry, he was puzzled to find that Harry had no interest in him. Hagrid half expected Harry to gawk like his aunt, uncle, and cousin being as someone of Hagrid's stature was a rare sight indeed. Harry just stared into the glow of a computer monitor as Hagrid kneeled down and bent over to greet Harry from outside of his cupboard. "Hullow Harry, muh name is Hagrid." Harry continued to stare at the glow but acknowledged Hagrid with a disinterested "uhh hmm". Still rather taken by Harry's reaction Hagrid continued. "O-oi got you a letter here. It's from Hogworts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!" Hagrid broke the wax seal bearing the Hogwarts crest and began to read aloud. "Dear Mr. Potter-" When Hagrid finished the letter he looked down to see that Harry had not broken his gaze from the monitor and had began typing on the keyboard. "Well don't just sit there Harry! You're ay WIZARD!" Harry abruptly stopped typing. "Wot did you just coll me?" asked Harry in a irritated tone. "Ah-ay waizard, you're a wizard" responded Hagrid nervously. In a swell of frustration Harry aggressively retorts "FUCK YOU MATE. I'M NOT A VIRGIN, I'M NOT EVEN 20 YEARS OLD. I've been building small rigs now for a few years after coming to the realization that for single and even some dual gpu configurations that a mid tower and full size atx board were way too large and full of empty wasted space. 3.5" drives are deprecated now that 1tb+ 2.5" ssds exist so now you dont even need space for those large drives. If you really need tons of storage you should have a small nas populated with high capacity 3.5" drives as its more efficient and makes more sense anyway (data accessible from all computers on the network)

unfortunately any fx processor will bottleneck a card at least a tiny bit. depending on the game up to like 10% slower maybe a bit more. but its not bad for the price. you could get a low end i5 for 70$ more. or a used k one for a similar price. mid tower shouldnt be hard at all to find a board for, they fit atx boards.

I was tempted to do a high tier build with this old Antec. It has space for a rear exhaust fan, a side panel fan, and a 80mm intake fan in the front. It probably would have been more than adequate for a decent Haswell system.
