This is what I recommend and I will explain why after.

base distro: funtoo
init manager: systemd
pkg management: portage
login manager: slim
WM/DE: i3
Utils: lxappearance for gtk, qt tools (gtksyle USE flag for gtk themes in qt), dmenu and at least firefox

Why Funtoo for the base operating system? This is simply for the one and only fact that it's base portage cache is from git and takes MUCH less time than rsync. Hell even you could make a mirror of their git and just patch things yourself for the distro.

For the kernel, Funtoo has (by default) more kernel sources available to your. You could just compile a kernel using 'debian-sources' and the result is a kernel which will work on most hardware. Packaging that wouldn't be too hard with a basic script. Create your own ebuild to install the precompiled kernel and you're good to go for the hardest part of a gentoo based installation.

Now the reason for why I really suggest portage is because you can create a build server and distribute binaries with it. This will make installation much easier for your average /g/noob. That way your live .iso would be pretty much mean just installing the base gentoo tarball and then you just need to point the /etc/portage/make.conf to the right place for installation. This way you have a pretty quick installation.

The i3 idea is for it's simplicity of use and it's ability to run in both tiled and floating mode. That should please most people. Couple this together with dmenu and you won't be disappointed.

Slim as the DM is pretty light weight but realistically, you really don't need a DM. This is just further ricing potential.

Now for the utils, lxappearance does the job pretty well when setting most things up (GUI wise) on the system. You can make your qt theme match your gtk theme pretty easily too if you compile the right USE flag into the package dev-qt/qtgui.

>>
>>46807845
Why not a more barebones base system? Like, say, Slackware? We could put portage on it (emerde exists) and go from there.
>>
>>46807900
Nice try, Canonical.
>>
>>46807924
>naming a fundie distro
>>
>>46807904
Not the guy you linked too, instead the guy who wrote up the idea about using Funtoo.

Comparing Pentoo to Gentoo is like comparing Ubuntu to Kali.

It's the same thing with some extras you can install. Also with Pentoo you can just install the overlay and install whatever you want from it on a base Gentoo (even Funtoo) system.

Funtoo has some more innovative ideas compared to Gentoo too. They for starters have more choice for portage profiles, a better version of portage (it's not stuck in the past) and they have more ebuilds for things like kernels.

>>46807924
It's not a bad idea. Running a system which can be built by the said anon will give them more control over decisions as how they want to build the OS. The installation between a Gentoo distro and a Slackware distro is close enough that most Linux noobs will crap themselves just seeing the command line. You may as well start off with a Gentoo/Funtoo system.

>>
>>46808011
I like the idea of using Slackware as a base because, for me, Slack is the most "vanilla" Linux distro out there, save for LFS. Funtoo looks interesting though. And having a distro already integrated with the package management most people here seem to want is a better idea than a retrofitted software that, last time I used it, kept bugging out.

In the beginning was the faggotry, and the faggotry was with /g/, and the faggotry was /g/

/g/ is too funny. i've seen so many OS projects identical to this one come and go. those that even make it to the choosing-default-packages phase, rarely suggest anything beyond a DE, browser and rice. it reveals what virtually all of /g/'s linux user base uses linux for: rice and unwarranted self importance. linux is useful for people who actually take advantage of its many (usually developer-oriented) features, but since /g/ can't program or really do anything meaningful with computers, we get boring, pointless distros like OP's that don't actually have anything interesting to offer.

logo needs to adhere to /g/.
therefore it needs to have connections to this elements:
gentoo/arch
autism
elitism
consumerism
GNU/linux interjection
freedoms
extra autism
must be written entirely in machine code(or assembler for pussy-mode, or c for retard-mode).

yes, logo needs to be programmed, we aren't designer/marketing shitheads.

just a few more logos and we're almost at step 1
>>
Why is the logo so important? The collection of software matters more.
>>
>>46814329
What matters is the feeling we're trying to create.

This isn't just another operating system. It's a way of life.
>>
>>46814354
So we're switching from LIFE OS to whatever this will be?
>>
>>46814354
Why not just create a gnu/linux distribution that's fucking hard to install and maintain? The logo would be Stallman's face.

This made my day

Oh I get it. Like logos like logical. Awesome name. This is gonna be awesome. Great job friends

Outsider here, what the fuck is this /g/? are you guys doing an OS?
>>
>>46814584
No they're clearly figuring out marketing a non-existent one.
>>
>>46814584
3 weeks ago, a guy launched the idea of doing a distro.
The thread went into a logo thread, and they named the distro "logos".
some guy didn't liked it so they forked the project, and renamed it ricebowl with a different logo.
and a third fork was done.

the next day we could see only logos and ricebowl
then nothing for a week.
Ricebowl seems to be over.
A guy claimed that logos managed to have 20 guys working on it on irc. They used google drive to make a list of all the features of logos (which based distro, systemd or not, what de, software...)

and now, you can see some logos threads, but no real news about the project.
>>
they are doing the ideas. You need a lot of ideas guys for a successful project :^)
>>
>>46813236
You can always go back to it.

Bring your Union Jack with you the locals will love it

So you are doing cool logos on PS?
>>
>>46814845
>20 guys working on it on irc
Where?
>>
>>46815093
The logo is more important. We aren't ricebowl fags.
>>
>>46815130
not part of this shit. If I want something done I would just go reading lfs and not rely on /g/ that can't really start a project (doing a logo isn't starting it)

>>46815155
good question, I would like to know what they managed to do
>>
>>46813765
"muh round and non-edgy, seamless and lazy, flat design where lowercase fonts reign"

Do you know what real graphic design is about?

What about a better name for the OS to begin with?
Not GENOM either.
Neither something that ends in [ou] like Nidjerou
>>
>>46815538
note that it only works if the distro is like, based on Gentoo Master Race
>>

Ricebowl is still going and that sounds exactly like what is going on with ricebowl.

Nah, not every board is as shit as /g/, while I wouldn't even count /g/ as one of the shittiest, that crown definetly takes /a/utism and /v/irginity

This looks like it belongs to the trashbin of an Irish casino.

I dunno. /g/ OS logo should probably have some kind of connection with /g/ or 4chan itself.

ie:
4-leaf clover
Yotsuba silhouette
Woodscrews, 3.5, housefires, etc.

>>

oh neat, I made that thread. i thought it'd just 404 too.
>>
meme quotes / arrow cannot be the logo, that's too...stupid.

It should be a collage of every operating system we are going to steal from, but modify the code just enough to not get sued.
