I just installed linux mint and its fucking awesome
why do I never see it on /g/?
pleb
>>46782128
Because it is literally the worst bistro.
>>46782128
Becauase when the packages that mint uses were relevant, /g/, let alone 4chan, didn' yet even exist.
>>46782132
That's Ubuntu you're thinking of.
>>46782128
Everyone is using Gentoo. Why aren't you?
>>46782132
how come it´s number 1 on distrowatch then?
>>46782146
>everyone is using gentoo
>>46782128
>x86_64 Linux 3.13.0-37-generic
You know the current stable release is 3.19.0 correct?
>>46782128
I don't see the advantage of mint over ubuntu to be honest. The packages are generally more out of date and they don't make security patches as quickly. My guess is that Unity's Amazon Search feature turned a lot of people off so they bailed to the most familiar thing available. Now that Mint is popular though why might see some cool Mint-specific development but I sort of doubt it.
>>46782226
>Arch repos still unaware of this
I thought Arch was supposed to be bleeding edge, and not a shitty dinosaur distro.
>>46782153
That's exactly why it's not good. The entire point of Linux is to not be mainstream. You want to find the most obscure operating system that you are able to install and work with. If we wanted the most popular and best OS, we would just use windows
>>46782246
Install testing repo
Sudo pacman -Syu
>>46782128
>2216 packages
>on a presumably fresh install
That why.
>>46782253

>>46782229
untity is shit
mint comes with a lot of handy stuff and works perfect out of the box
it´s waay more customizeable and looks better
>>46782256
>testing repo on bleeding edge
Yo dawg.jpg
>>46782288
If he wants the current stable kernel, which is what I was referring to than use the testing repo. If he wants to be "bleeding edge" just compile Linus's git repo and install...
>>46782128
Because it's "entry level" and /g/ is pretentious. If your OS isn't difficult or time consuming to install and/or use, it's pleb tier.
>>46782286
How long have you used Unity? It might not be as customizable as KDE, but it's a 10/10 DE after you remove the botnet.
Why don't you like it?
>>46782348
it´s slow and buggy
windows keep freezing
and it´s really just fugly
why would you use unity on purpose?
>>46782376
It never lagged, nor froze. Not even once.
Maybe you have a shitty PC or used it when they first changed from gnome.
Because its too accessible for /g/.
BeOS is godmode
Bloated pile of shite, that's why.
What about kubuntu?
>>46782128
Now change the icon theme and you are all good to go.
The entire point of cinnamon is being one of those two distros with a shitty gtk DE installed by default.
You'd be better off just installing KDE on ubanto or debian than using anything derived from that pure freetard trash.
The GTK based UI is for people that want to look normal and productive with gooeys, but still can't stand actual quality gooeys because they're neckbeards that want to be slowly driven towards unusually heavyweight ncurses apps written in python.
>b-b-b-but kew tee is bloat
Autistic neckbeards.
Mint is fine. If you install LMDE and remove the bloat packages it's pretty good.
Comes with every piece of software known to man installed. There's no easy way of disabling their retarded update checker that by sorts packages into weird tiers and doesn't update the kernel ever unless you jump through hoops manually. They hijack the Firefox search for their main ad revenue. Green is a shitty colour and every time I see Linux Mint I see it covered in marijuana leafs.
Their DEs look good by default I'll give them that.
>>46782253
>>46782253
>best OS
>seriously?!
>>46782305
>needs testing to use the current stable, on a "bleeding edge" distro
sure.
>>46782128
Coz it's shit, it's a project that literally takes Ubuntu and makes it worse. If you want use Ubuntu with Cinnamon or MATE just install Ubuntu and install Cinnamon or MATE on it.
>>46782473
Have you tried haiku yet? Thoughts?
Mint is a fine distro OP. If you're not trolling. stick with what you like. It werks. And shit that just werks just werks
I'm using the Debian based Mint version and it's perfectly fine.
/g/ just doesn't like it because it's not as autistic as they wish
Too mainstream and tailored towards former Windows-osers and computer illiterates.
>>46782170
do you have any tearing issues with your laptop?
i have xubuntu running, cant fix it though.
compton wont work either

>>46784929
>>46784949
issues? nope everything fine
>>46785000
thanks i'll give mint a try.
might be an issue because of xfce or some shit
>>46784929
What's your .conf file look like? I've never had issues with tearing and I've used it on several machines.backend = "glx";
paint-on-overlay = true;
glx-no-stencil = true;
glx-no-rebind-pixmap = true;
vsync = "opengl-swc";
shadow = false;
fading = false;
>>46785103
i used one i found in the ubuntu forums where some other people had issues too, i'll give yours a try
>>46782267
Fucking this.
Also I tried playing CS:GO on it, and the stutter was crazy. Framerate was like 50 lower than on Windows too (still 200+ but still cinnamon was supposed to be fast).
>>46782128
Here's why:
Non-free software by default
Non-rolling release
Systemd bloat
Other than that it's an ok distro if you don't care about freedoms and choice. I'd use cinnamon or mate though, although your xfce looks good
>>46785362
>Systemd bloat
Very nice may may there friend. Mind if I save it?
I have Mint on both my desktop and laptop and I like it a lot. I don't have much to compare it with though, because the only other distros I have used besides Centos/RHEL are more specialized stuff, like Puppy Arcade and Kali, etc.
Compared to Windows 7 though, it's great as a general OS. My only complaint is that they don't update the Nvidia driver package so I'm using a generation or two older, tried to install the new one manually but I must have been doing something wrong because it fucked up. Still, plenty of horsepower for the types of games I play (Mount and Blade, Wasteland 2, shit like that).
Lubuntu is better
I hope you're using LMDE and not regular mint.
>>46782128
Because /g/ is mostly filled with elitist pricks.
It's good to know that you have installed Mint to get your feet wet with GNU/Linux.
Should you need the most newer software and/or never reinstall the OS? You could try later Linux Mint Debian Edition or Manjaro Linux
>>46785362
Not using Manjaro OpenRc with Linux-libre, Parabola repos and free-drivers.
>Rolling Release
>Freedom ensured
>Free of "systemd bloat"
>PROTIP: Just werks
