i have large hands and a reasonably sized phone, htc 1 m7
i have perhaps average dexterity with my thumbs, and i struggle to reach all parts of the screen
another problem is that in stretching my hand out to reach opposite sides of the screen, my grip falters (i don't use phone cases, inb4 tards claim they're useful)
but even if i add a case for grip, my 'reach' would be less expansive
i really like samsung's solution; having a side-screen with accessible apps on the corner.
i forgot what that phone was called, but it was an intriguing solution to a common problem

i just rest the phone on my pinky, i don't keep it in a tight grip unless i'm in a huge crowd or something. general use doesn't need a tight grip, which helps reaching anywhere you need one handed and just feels more comfortable for me
