Why aren't you using Windows Server 2012 as OS, /g/?

Because Windows is a terrible operating system, let alone server operating system.

Can you install more user-centric modules on WS to make it more like Windows 8 (make it a gaymin machine)

Get-WindowsFeature *GUI* | Add-WindowsFeature will give you the same UI experience that is in Windows 8/8.1. This is not a bloated experience.

>desktop is default interface
No, it's not. Powershell is default interface

>boots way faster than any other windows
Not really.

Reasons not to use Server as a desktop?
1 - No bluetooth support
2 - Wireless support out of the box is turned off
3 - System is optimized for background tasks, so your chinese cartoons may stutter until this is changed (and it's really easy to do)
4 - Licensing (if you actually care about that stuff)
>>
>>46618075
>up to 4 TB of internal memory
Muh Linux can do 128TiB or something, standard fare. Could do more if necessary with a setting or patch.

> 640 cores
2048 at least.

Now, if only I had that kind of hardware and free electricity and housing for it...

> no bloatware
> boots way faster than any other windows
Guess what...

> desktop is default interface
... what do you mean, and why is this important? You invested like a hundred thousand dollars in your server and you can't change some trivial configurables?

99.9% of them also use Linux and perhaps also OSX and BSD, I'd say.

at least you can buy linux support contacts from redhat

deploying osx machine is a real pain in the ass as well, google had to write their own tools to manage their macbook fleet because apple doesn't care about that market

They still do use them to do real work.

Yup, they do.

Why would a server have a video out out at all? All management should be done through ssh, or telnet in the Windows world.
>>
>>46618337

You sound like a very experienced person when it comes to enterprise grade server maintenance.
>>
>>46618277
No, they don't. Do some actual research on distros and installs instead of what you "assume".

All management should be done through salt/puppet. If you have to use SSH or RDP to access individual terminals, you will never scale.

Pretty funny, OP.

I'd do it but there's no way any cracks for it are going to be legit and not put me on the botnet.

Linux Because of Free Software?
If you want a free Windows OS you can try Hyper-V Server 2012 (yepp is fully free).
(And of course support Linux like commands inside the powershell 3.0 CLI)
(It can run unlimited Linux/BSD VMS)
Don't worry for the graphical environment, you can find a soluction googling about it. (btw Explorer is gone ;)

Powershell isn't linux like. It's more SQL like.

For example:
Get-VM | Stop-VM -force

Or one of my favourites, and this can be pulled from XML, hard coded, or somewhere in the middle:

  if ($Net.Count -gt 1)
{
$ifIndex = $net.ifIndex
$ifIndex1 = $Net.ifIndex[0]
$ifIndex2 = $Net.ifIndex[1]
$NIC1 = Get-NetAdapter -InterfaceIndex $ifIndex1
$NIC2 = Get-NetAdapter -InterfaceIndex $ifIndex2
$NIC1 | Rename-NetAdapter -NewName NIC1
$NIC2 | Rename-NetAdapter -NewName NIC2
New-NetLbfoTeam -Name LAN -TeamMembers $NIC1.Name,$NIC2.Name -LoadBalancingAlgorithm Dynamic -TeamingMode Lacp -Confirm $false
}
else
{
$ifIndex = $net.ifIndex
$NIC = Get-NetAdapter -InterfaceIndex $ifIndex
$NIC | Rename-NetAdapter -NewName LAN
}

Proof of concept script. The values will end up being pulled from an XML. Checks to see if there are two NIC's, and if so, create a team. Otherwise, just rename the adapter. Worked perfectly on my Microserver Gen8.

You mean 99.9% of major businesses have massive stocks of MS-office formatted critical files that won't open in libreoffice

Why do newfags always think server is better?
If it were universally better, they'd just make everything in the style of servers.
They are different things, made for different purposes.
One is not always better than the other.
>>server tier performance
This is done by disabling many things that run by default in Windows...
