UC Berkeley's introductory Computer Science class, 61A, now has over 1300 students enrolled.
>>
Are they all Asian?

>>43857901
Isn't that pretty normal for introductory classes?

Like 3/4 will drop out because "muh video games". I wish CS and CP was still for those passionate about computers.

well that is much more accommodating than a shit-tier community college like mine.

>locked out of the courses i needed this fall because they filled up insanely quick
>student cap for any class is always 30 even if the room can seat more
>as usual for a community college, half of those people will stop showing up after one week and a handful will drop the course
>can't get access to the course even if i ask the instructors to unlock a seat for me, they always cite the standard 'lack of terminals/seating' issue as an excuse
guess that's what i get for taking it easy instead of incessantly refreshing the registration page at exactly midnight which is apparently what everyone else does.

the way you get classes at any community college is, attend the class once the semester begins. Keep going to every session and at the end of every day, ask the teacher if there is space. I'm not kidding, and this is how you get good fucking classes with good professors, and don't believe anything they say in the beginning. Professors want small classes, and will feed you bullshit to get you to go away

If you wanted to learn programming, it's much quicker to do a software development course in college. If you wanted to do a university course in programming, you can do software engineering which is totally dedicated to programming. If you want to do CS, it's because you want to learn the theory of information. Programming is the application of that theory but programming is not the point of CS.

>But saved myself like $60k for not going straight to a 4 year college.

this so much

highschool kids don't get it, but going straight into a 4-year commitment, one that will determine the rest of your life, right after highschool is a fucking retarded idea. Not to get personal, but at least at JCs you can fuck up and not get completely fucked over. I spent four years of my life at a JC and went on to get a Masters and a 90k starting job (mostly because I worked a lot and had "experience") while many of my peers who went straight into a 4-year got fucked over with debt

tl;dr for anyone who's not in college yet, don't buy into the hype. Go to a JC until you're mature enough to handle a more independent life

That's a big number, but it's actually not shocking if you break it down.

>Berkeley is a fucking big school: over 36,000 students.
>Berkeley is KNOWN for CS in particular (BSD anyone?) Their CS program has a history that is almost as well regarded as MIT's.
>freshman class, half or more will not graduate with their bachelors in CS.

I'd say a reasonable guess is 25% of these kids actually finish the program. The rest will switch to IT or a completely different field or drop out. That leaves a graduating class of 325 CS majors. That's only roughly double the number of CS grads in my graduating class, and my school was almost as big as Berkeley (about 30,000 students.)

Also, if Berkeley is like most schools, the students who are minoring in CS will also take those introductory classes.
>>
>>43862349
MIT has higher requirements.
IIRC, the cutoff for ACT scores is 32 for MIT, and something like 27-29 for UoC Berkeley.
>>
>>43862349
The course is very popular among non-majors who want a little CS experience under their belt.

>>43862368
And...?
>>
>>43859035

the difference is that you could be doing that for $5,000 at a community college or $20,000 at a state college
>>
>>43862349
To add onto this:

To declare CS you must have a 3.0 in your prerequisites. These classes have averages of 2.7-2.9. There's been talk of raising the cap so even less people get in.

Plenty of people decide they don't want to do CS/get shit grades and get discouraged. When I took the course the averages on our midterms were in the mid 50%'s and none of the 61 series classes are curved.

If you want to "work with computers", you do information systems, programming, or systems administration.

If you want to wank over logic theory, hardcore theoretical mathematics involving only two numbers and a series of modifiers, and maybe consult in how to design new systems, get into CS.

If you want to work with computer HARDWARE, get into Electrical Engineering, and brush up on statistics and calculus.

Went a year, realized I wasn't going to learn anything. Was ready to transfer to a good school, but they said credits wouldn't transfer unless I had an associates. Knocked out the AS and transferred 100 miles away. Advisor at new school waited two weeks into the semester to let me know only 4 of ~25 classes transferred. Fucked out of any refund for the semester and was stuck in a year lease. Worked till the end, moved back to original shit school and have been back and forth across the company taking high paying contract jobs and a couple classes on the side to finish up my BSBA. Currently have a salaried FT gig as an "IT director" for a local company, but the pay is shit($30k) compared to the people working below me. 50+ year old programmer makes $85k and 40 year old server tech makes $55k.

CS was fun, making neural networks to find breast cancer, writing p2p hashing servers, coding linux modules, it was really fun. But dealing with real world problems is probably even more fun.

The only sad part is most people around don't have the expertise to acknowledge how awesome is what you did. That was the one nice thing about uni. Like minded people.

My uni's introductory class had 130 students. 40 passed. 20+ of those went to work in their native countries.

The pass rate went from 30% to 20% as the years passed and the class size increased.

Computer science is not something you can be good at if you don't like it.
>>
>>43862349

Berkeley's elite CS status is for its grad program, not its undergrad. Those classes are fuckhuge because their maximal thresholds for undergraduate admissions are set by California law, and as such they have to let a lot more kids in than they'd like -- their undergrad CS program isn't really elite in the sense that their graduate program is.

Of course, they just fail out a ton after the first class, so it gets to where they'd rather have it eventually. But, still -- undergrad is one thing, grad is something else entirely. Schools get reputations for CS by having elite graduate programs, and people who don't know any better assume it applies to the undergraduate programs.

>>43871341

Basically, the only way you're going to do it is finish a BS somewhere, then get into a *decent* graduate program (which is fucking difficult if you've already fucked yourself academically), and finish a MS with some significant publications.

Note that most people at Berkeley don't have significant publications at the MS stage -- so you'd be, in effect, proving you're better than everyone there to have a shot at getting in the PhD program, but that's the reality of it.

Yes, it sucks.
>>
>>43872203
It gets harder the older you are; most of the elite programs bias against age something fierce.

>>43872328
>IT saturated
If you mean IT including the guys who reset your password when you forget it, maybe.

If you mean actual CS or SE positions, lolno. I had a friend graduate under academic probation because he couldn't manage a 3.0 GPA at a state school have three offers over $75k before graduating. The CS department at the middle-of-the-pack state has gone six years without a CS grad not finding a job in CS.

I really don't understand this system, why do americans pay 50 grand to enroll in a course they'll just drop two weeks later?

In France, the best way to get a solid CS degree is through an engineering school, which falls outside of classic uni courses.

It's two years of "classe preparatoire", where you eat, breathe and sleep math and physics, all day every day, with continuous exams.
(Many people fuck off at this point)

After surviving this ordeal its 3 years of what everyone actually wants to do, you pick a major and get a host of obligatory courses in various fields of CS.
Failing any of these will result in repeating the year or getting kicked out.

In many cases both phases have entry exams which range from piss easy to suicidal tier.

The maximum amount for a year is around 8k, which is very expensive in this country, but in the end you get the equivalent of an american master of science degree.

Do it, now.
>>
>>43876333
Nope.
All our teachers are arabs who are hard core mathematicians.
We're doing pretty complex math but for them it's low level garbage.
The grading is insane, in classe preparatoire it's not unusual for the average grade of the entire class to be around 30-35% for an exam.
The idea behind the difficulty level is that the absolute best student shouldn't get above 80%, which leaves the rest of us (supposedly France's best and brightest) with abysmal grades
