Tox needs stickers.
If you aren't familiar with them, they're a feature of Facebook and some other sites and apps. They're inline pictures, usually cartoon faces (now sometimes characters), expressing various emotions or doing various activities.
Stickers are different from emoticons. With emoticons, you are bound to the unicode characters. Stickers are a deliberate step away from that. They're a separate thing, you have much more freedom. If you don't have a Facebook account, use someone else's and look at the stickers to get an idea of what I mean.
Stickers should have their own rules, like /me messages. A sticker should appear inline at a consistent size, and it would be cool if users could right click and add a new sticker to their collection. Stickers would be sent by clicking on the emoticon button, and selecting a different tab from the popup menu (again, look at Facebook's chat).
I think this would put Tox far ahead of the curve in current messengers, as opposed to just keeping up. Skype doesn't have stickers yet. But they are very very popular wherever they're implemented.
Facebook has a sticker market, where users can try free sticker packs and be encouraged to buy others. This is only feasible because of Facebook's restrictive nature. I think an open sticker ecosystem would be a flower bed for the creativity of the users, and would definitely be a big plus over Facebook's sticker implementation, which is the most well-known right now.
