If you're doing serious number input, then there's no hope. You'll just have to deal with the one build into the qwerty block, or the number row on the keyboard or get an external.

>>42993352
I'd like to know too. You're far from the first who's had the problem.
And thus is why they should've kept the latch. Fun thought: there's magnets in the bezel of the X220t but they don't really do anything, the spring thingy in the hinge does the work.

fuck you thinkpad faggots

i fell for the ruse a year ago and got a t430

absolute piece of shit with the worst screen I have ever seen in my life
>>
I have posted this before but I'll try again:

Approx. 5 days ago I bought an -almost- new ThinkPad x200. The BIOS had a supervisor password on it.

I opened the thing up, shortened out the SDA & SCL pins on the EEPROM chip. It skipped me straight to BIOS, without using a password, but options were still greyed out (couldn't edit them).

I tried another method (from AllService.ro forum). Basically it involves building a small electrical circuit and hooking the EEPROM to a serial port.

I was able to dump my BIOS binary file but the password was not visible on the designated address. (because my bios is TCPA encrypted).

Now this forum called AllService is offering a service to unlock TCPA encrypted BIOSes. They modify your binary file with the password, and you'll have to cook it back.

Because I don't want to spend 40 euros on that shit I want to try to do it myself. It seems quite logical.

I have found the hex address where the password resides. I am thinking about wiping it out and replacing it with 0's, then cooking it back to the BIOS. One of my concerns is the checksum of the binary file, and how the beast is gonna handle it.

Has anyone been through the same situation as me? I'd like some more information about the process because I'll probably end up bricking.

Guys, what's the best OS (and distro if GNU/Linux) for an X200?

I'm mainly gonna be using it for a note-taking and textbook-viewing device, with a bit of light web browsing. I'm moderately experienced with GNU/Linux but don't want something that's high maintenance.

It arrives tomorrow, the 1.86GHz version with a 160GB HDD; but I'm unsure of the version of the screen. It's this one in the picture.
>>
Quick question: is 300$ too much for a used t410?
>>
>>42993431
You are fucking stupid. No one likes T430 here, If you ever buy anything past T420 series you are dumb sheep and pay for thinkpad brand instead of quality. Thinkpads are susposed to be bought as cheap laptops that will last. That's why you are susposed to fish for good deals and buy cheapest you can. This way no matter what happens you have no regrets, and plenty of those will last for next 10 years. I use X61 myself, dirt cheap, just werks, small and portable.
If you actually want somewhat new machine don't buy thinkpad. Thinkpads are dead, new thinkpads are not worth shit. Go buy Dell latitude.
>>
>>42994842
Are you going to be using the laptop display or an external monitor? Are you going to be mobile/do you need portability? Budget?

Because you could also just get a dock for the ThinkPad and pretty much use it as a desktop replacement. Wouldn't have to use the laptop keyboard, touchpad, or small screen. Then you can just pop it off whenever you need to take it with you.
>>
>>42995055
yes it's too much

Follow up question: 190$ for one without an hdd?
I have plenty of spare HDDs but I would need to buy an installation frame
>>
>>42994999
There is no such a thing as the best. Xubuntu or Mint with Cinnamon. Debian Sid or Arch if you want rolling release. Crunchbang or Debian stable if you don't mind using 2 years old kernel. Gentoo if you like compiling. That's it.
Also any GNU/linux will work on x200.
>>
>>42995158
That's pretty good if it doesn't have minimum specs and is it good condition.

The hard drive rails are only like $10, so whatever. Would highly suggest getting an SSD though.

>>
>>42995291
Pretty much. Your wifi may or may not work with Debian or Crunchbang, it's piss easy to make it work anyway. With Ubntoo and Mint everything should work oob. Arch and Gentoo will work if you make it work.

I'm looking to buy an x220 but I'm wondering what kind of battery life can one expect?

I'm assuming the battery I'll get with it will be worthless, so how is it with aftermarket 6 or 9 cell ones? For avarage wifi/3g web browsing with medium+ brightness?
>>
>>42996176
>I'm assuming the battery I'll get with it will be worthless

Why? It's only 2 years old. It shouldn't be in that bad of condition... I own a T420 and X220 and the batteries were in good condition when I got them.

It's safe to assume you can get about 1 hour per cell. Obviously it varies with what you're doing and what your settings are.

Because people tend to not give a shit.
My own father bought his crappy Dell laptop, which in the last 5 years I've never seen him move outside of our house, regardless battery was kept in and I'm pretty sure it has never used up an entire cycle in its life - before dying due to negligence.

Plus the ebay listing saying "good battery 2 hours" is not that promising either.

no i-series or transnote sadly....
transnotes seem to be sub $200, there was a spectacular model being sold for $180, 100% working but I didn't nab it, now broken/missing parts units are sold for that much on eBay.

I would like to get an i-1124, its basically between the ThinkPad 240X and X20.
There is also a silver I series I would want to get, most other aren't sweet with the exception that some can be used to play CDs without the unit being turned on completly.

Few of them are ugly however, after buying an 280Z, I don't care for the size factor as the tradeoff in keyboard feel isn't great. 770X is a fucking anvil to carry.

I need to be able to get my 365XD in a working order, maybe I can browse 4chan on it one day... I love typing on it.

So, my T410 doesn't turn on anymore. I was using it yesterday through the battery cause I didn't have a power outlet available and I use it till the battery was at 5% and turn it self off.

Neither, A31p has a crap clone of what you asked, here's what I bought. It doesn't have texture, just a 2D look of carbon fiber, kinda gay.

I don't have a for the one on the left, though it doesn't have a top finish, so you feel the texture, slighly better to see.

>>
>>42998371
No prob.
Yeah the CF vinyl can be a pain, espeically if it bends, it could show a wrinkle when applied.
I just do quite a few cuts on the edges before appling, so that it can wrap around and overlap to a decent finish where it doesn't bubble or have a sharp edge. I'm getting better, gonna wrap a W500 soon because it was scratched up badly.

Shit sells easily.

>>42998850
There's a few refurb'd T440p in the outlets for under 1K, a few X240's under $800, dunno if they let payment plans on those models.
There was maybe one T440 which had a HD+ screen... Don't look at the E-series on there, I saw an L520 but it probably has a shitty WXGA screen and that awful uncentered keyboard.
The L440 seems decent, still has the black color of the ThinkPad line and you don't have to take out the whole bottom end to get to the HDD or RAM, still has a door for it.

The screen is not a huge deal if you're using it as a work machine. And the chiclet keyboard is just as rugged and accurate. It's only a matter of faste.

There are actually no cuts, anon. I cut a big enough sheet and apply it on the surface, then i cut the rest with an hobby knife. I need to like pay some taxes in order to get a level 2 status on some government agency that I can't get because I'd need to pay even more taxes and only companies can get it.
And even if I get it, I'd have to pay the item, plus shipping, plus 50% of the product+shipping and 35% of the item+shipping because I'd have to be using USD instead of ARS.

What ruse? It's pretty well known that chinkpads are just as crappy as everything else.

They stopped making Thinkpads years ago.

Ok, so I bought both a T420 and a W520, and that's a pretty long story in itself, but I have a more specific question: When watching an identical video on both laptops, when there is a slow pan in the footage, my W520 will display it as jittery, while my T420 displays it smoothly. Just ordered another 4gb stick for my t420.

Runs almost perfect on the stock 4gb, but I'm having problems when I run a vm + a lot of tabs. It'll also help with imagemagick shizzle.

Ive had this t420 for about a year and jesus fuck, it's the best piece of tech I've handled. Upgrading/taking it apart is the easiest thing in the world. The quality over all is great. Damn, love the 1600x900 screen, I've been using it for work and home stuff. Only wish the viewing angles were slightly better, but fuck that for now. And the keyboard is god tier.

>>

No. They've really skimped with everything that make a Thinkpad a Thinkpad except for the screen. (build quality, full voltage CPUs, keyboard)

Now-a-days. your best bet is to get an HP EliteBook or a Dell Latitude. If cost is no object, how about you get a w701ds and shitpost on /g/ about it? It should last you forever, as well.

But if you're really set on a thinkpad, get a pre-2012 X, T or W without the s or i suffix. (x220, t420 and w520). If you're not sure, here's a pretty good guide:

https://yttrium-tyclief.github.io/guides/Thinkpads/wseries.html
>>
>>43001084
God no. They're much cheaper on Ebay.
>>
Holy shit, /g/. I've come up with the best idea ever. When I go through with it, I'll greentext it for you. So anyway, here's my idea. Get a Thinkpad older than a T60, and take it to the apple store.
Once there, I'm going to talk to one of the sales associates and say
"Hey, I have this old beater laptop that I'm looking to replace. The thing is, I love the build quality. Can you do this with Macs?" and as I say that, drop it on the ground.
I want to see the look of terror on his face, and what he says in response to that.
As stated earlier, I'll greentext when I go through with it. Maybe take pics of his face, also.
>>
>>43003052
I'm not set on a Thinkpad, but it has to be brand new, not second hand. And a reliable, robust and long life design. I don't need top performance, any i5 with 4-6 gigs will do.

Will take a look at HP EliteBook or a Dell Latitude, thanks anon

I got two W500's im about to sell that seem to come with them, which means the T500 can have them.
X200 (non tablet) has them as well.

A few Z-Series had them also, but they needed the motherboard to come with the camera, can't just add it on.

My X300 has one as well, so did the X301
T400 may have one, unsure, I doubt any of the 14" or 15" 4:3 had enough space for them

A couple I am refurbishing just arrived, and both are a surprise - I never knew the X201t came with an IPS screen, perhaps it's after market but it is pen enabled so I'm not sure, and the T410s is even more of a surprise. It's actually lighter than the X201t, has a SSD, and the screen is gorgeous, with that heavenly 16:10 aspect ratio - it might just become my "on the road" machine of choice. Good stuff.

X220 is a 12.5" laptop and the T420 is a 14".

The X220 only came with integrated graphics, the T420 had optional Nvidia graphics. X220 has no ultrabay which means no cd/dvd reader. X220 was stuck with 1366x768, T420 could go up to 1600x900.

The X220 Tablet only came with up to a 6-cell battery, the regular X220 and T420 could go up to 9-cell batteries.

>>
>>43010904
Lol. This is the fun with GNU/Linux - I never had problems using it. I just didn't feel I held enough control.
>>
>>43010853
Trisquel uses Linux-libre, which means it's missing some binary blobs in the Linux kernel, that you may need to use all the hardware on your computer. There are IBM Thinkpads with core 2 duos resold with Linux-libre distros on them, but that doesn't mean every Thinkpad will work. You might end up just wanting to use Ubuntu, Mint, or Arch, as Trisquel is based off Arch.

>>
>>43010932
>>43010940
Alright I've got a lot more to think about.
I won't install it just yet.
>>
>>43010917
I mean it felt like it when I used it, random chunks of OS were just missing, because they half-held on to a policy of free licenses and all, requiring most users to use rpmfusion. It didn't feel like it was made for the user, but rather just as a testing environment for software to be put in Red Hat later on. Don't get me wrong; I like the idea of testing bleeding-edge software for Red Hat, but it didn't feel like I could do much more than use firefox and mumble, without needing some kind of fix. I did use LXDE spin instead of default for a while, and my graphics chips were always too new for the drivers, I suppose, so obviously YMMV.
>>
>>43010954
Honestly, you can just install it, check if your hardware works, and then install a new one on top of it if it fails. You would only not want to do this if you have an SSD, or limited time/patience. The installs aren't even that long, and if you're coming from windows, IMO going through multiple different install processes could be a helpful Linux experience.
>>
>>43010973
>most users to use RPMfusion

you use nonfree software?
>>
>>43011024
I don't even use fedora right now; I'm just using ubuntu (yes I know, pleb) with a few proprietary pieces added.
When I had fedora, I still played nonfree games, (I still do) and to make them work at all, I needed the AMD nonfree driver to my A10 4600M APU to make anything really work. Beside that and S3 texture compression, the rpmfusion things I remember using were free software, but still not included with the normal repo. RPMFusion is split into free and nonfree, with free being things like audacity-freeworld, with its mp3 codecs etc. OGG and FLAC master races, but sometimes you have to download an MP3.
