A lot of times companies will do this to get people to quit. They'll give them a single shift a week and often will send them home early from that single shift.
An employee quitting is a lot safer for the company than firing them, legally speaking.
They do this a lot with employees who aren't terrible, just pretty bad. Like not bad enough to warrant a firing but bad enough that they would like to replace them.

I get so mad when I hear fat people say that they are completely healthy and there is no reason why they should lose weight. Okay, you may be healthy but what if your fat is making it difficult for the doctors to treat you?
Here's my story (sorry for my crappy English).
I've been overweight since childhood, obese as a teenager & young adult. I was almost 30 until I finally got rid of the excess fat and got in a healthy weight (BMI 22.35). One day I had a severe stomach pain and went to a hospital. The doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with me and one of the doctors presumed I had a cyst in my ovaries, but he wanted to be sure and send me to have an ultrasound scan. The nurse performing the scan said this to me:
"It's a good thing you're not overweight."
It came out of nowhere.
"Why is that?"
"Because if you were, you most likely would have visceral fat and we couldn't get a clear image of your insides and it would be a lot harder to figure out what is causing your pain."
After the doctor had a look at the ultrasound pictures, he could see that there was nothing wrong with my ovaries, but my appendix was swollen and most likely infected, which it was.
So in short: Because I'm not fat (anymore), the doctors were able to perform the right surgery on me. This has kept me motivated to keep myself in a healthy weight.
If the doctors can't figure out what is wrong with you because your excess fat is making it difficult/impossible for them to examine you properly, that's not their fault!
