These are the only acceptable things to do imho.
stretching is a big NO as you lose elasticity and muscle gains. Socializing is a NO as it could take you longer to wrap up a convo and now you're late to your set. Looking at or talking or talking to girls is a NO 1) who wants to be that creeper 2) they just distract you from going hard (that's why I keep a book handy ;-)

My friend wants me to make progress the same as I want him too. Going to the gym as a duo also makes sperglords less likely to try and start a conversation with us. When a day comes that I don't really want to go to the gym, I'll still go because it's essentially pre-arranged, and I always feel better after having gone.

I've not had to deal with any real downsides. Probably at more of an advantage since we started going to the gym together the week I first signed up, so while I've gone a few times myself, I don't really know any different.
I wouldn't say a partner is a necessity, but having a spot 100% of the time you need it is great. It's probably better if it's a friend who you'd be happy to workout with, over someone you've met at the gym.
