Yep, they're used in contact sports to protect the ballz, and also to make it less of an issue of them moving around too much (esp. in non-compression underwear).

Also, most kicking sports (K1, MMA) would have a plastic cup inside a jockstrap to keep it in place.

I honestly never understood why jockstraps became so fetishized in the first place, compression shortshorts are so much hotter.

I think it became fetished by gay men due to us being pretty disgusting sexually as a gender. It speaks about sport, sweat, scents, and keeps everything all nice an tight - even the butt is lifted by the straps. Cloth jockstraps are commonly more attractive than leather due to the association to these things.
