Do it if you want. What's more important, you getting a good exercise, or what some twat in the gym thinks of you? Fucking priorities nigga. If the smith machine allows you to gain confidence when starting out and get a proper workout then by all means use it

That said, proper benching will help you achieve better all round strength. Engaging all them stabiliser muscles and what not. I would recommend trying to do proper benching if you can. Always work with a manageable weight if you're doing it by yourself. Also, learn the roll of shame - if you're failing on a rep, then lower the bar to your chest, then roll it down your torso to your legs, sit up, and lower it onto the ground. Better than dropping the weight above your head and killing yourself.

This guy at my gym comes just to talk. I have never seen him lift a weight. Thing is he comes by himself and goes around talking to everyone. Yup, UCLA. Fucking hell my dude, Bfit is casual shitter central. I mean I myself am a noob (11 months), but at least I've put effort into reading, watching, and learning about weightlifting. I feel like most of the fuckers Bfit just go either because
A) Their friends go
B) It makes them feel cool
For example, my roommate is a half repper who only lifts when his friends invite him to, and he acts like he's a serious weightlifter. I don't even consider myself a serious lifter but I for sure as hell put more effort into it than he does.

Just pisses me off seeing these phuckers act like theyre kings of the world because they pick things up and put them down on their shitty brosplit they made up.

Bfit is nice cause it's close to the dorms (I'm in rieber), but other than that, it's shit.

Wooden just gives off such a nicer, more serious vibe. Especially in the rack area. Love seeing all those powerlifter dudes cause it inspires to train harder.

I'm hoping to join the powerlifting club next school year just to expose myself to those who are really serious about it and get tips and info on form and routines. But for now I'm just gonna keep gaining general strength.
