A bad hold over I had from the military was just not eating before I worked out. I've been exercising / lifting on and off since high school, and when it became part of my daily life for years I just stopped eating beforehand because we'd do it so early.

Last month I started eating about an hour or so before my work out (on the advice of /fit/ and it really makes a difference. I can lift so much more from eating.

So every morning before a work out I have tolled oats (with milk), 1 Tablespoon of chunky peanut butter, and a bottle of water. If I feel like I'm going to need the calories, I'll put in half a square of 90% dark chocolate (low sugar).
