To feel the joy of having fun, it just has to surpass a certain threshold (let that be 0 at the beginning for simplicity's sake). And this threshold doesn't move naturally. When I meet my friend I have 2 units of fun. When I meet him next time I still enjoy the 2 units of fun as the first time.
Of course, it'd be better if I had 8 FU (fun units) that I could reach by taking drugs. That however effectively moves the threshold upwards since that will fuck up my neurochemistry and I will be less receptive for fun.
Let's say my threshold is now at 3 FU. If I now visit my friend, I won't be able to experience the joy, meaning I'd have to take drugs again to feel the joy. This brings us back to the workout metaphor. You have to have more fun each time to get the same kick out of it. Abstaining from drugs doesn't have that problem, thus I'd prefer that.
