Early WoW was the best time of my life. A friend recommended it to me a few days before the summer between middle school and high school.
My friends and I spent that summer leveling, talking shit, and occasionally going outside and doing stuff in our housing complex.
This is a good allegory for how kids nowadays are raised. We were the last generation to play outside. Now kids play with their friends on Xbox live when they live two houses down.
Everything was so simple then....downing Ony for the first time, killing Rag, clearing BWL, wiping for hours in Naxx on a school night....

When I graduated grad school and got my first job, and my first paycheck, I felt like I had fell for the biggest scam in history.
9 years of school (took a few semesters off here and there) and I was making more per hour waiting tables going through school.

Wasted years of my life playing that game and games in general. Have pretty much quit games now, just play 1 or 2 new RPG's per when they come out. Only single player RPG's, so they end. Will play the Witcher 3 expansion this year and the Deus ex that's it.

That's a hard question OP. I ruined my life with my MMO addiction. I played my favorite Final Fantasy XI, when I should have joined clubs in highschool, studied harder in college. Somewhat unrelated, but I got in debt with my choice in college, and I further messed up my chances by playing games when shit got tough. I became more stressed, ate and ruined my body more, and the game was there for me, to make me feel better. The game launched in 2003 or 2004, and had that golden age up to 2008 or 2009? If you played now, you couldn't get as addicted, it's stale as fuck now.
The game helped me cope, I had friends, they supported me, they loved me, they're still my friends to this day. The gold times of that game were wonderful, like others have said, we chitchatted on vent, shouted nigger, retard and faggot at each other with no 'feminism/socialjustice movement reborn' yet to get angry at us. I can't be as open and honest to my real life friends or the people around me. To have these online buddies, is even more precious than real life friends and family, and the game had a way of keeping us together, perhaps the difficulty and the grind of it all, the forced pairing, the hatred of the early imperfect mechanics, that let us complain over and over together.
Throw it all away. Lose gains, keep my friends. Keep gains and good life, lose some of the bestest friends I may ever have in my life. Well I'm here with you, and I have my friends still. I am changing my ways. So yes, I would do it all over again. [just direct to a better college choice]
