I've never actually tried 1RM... I can do 4pl8 x 10.
I do them on the Smith machine (probably the only valid use of this machine) with my toes on the edge of some plates laying on the ground so I get more ROM.

How come on fictional superheros, etc, big calves look normal and proportional, but in real life they look wonky?

Because they train calves with as much patience as they train legs. Full ROM is the key
