Powerlifter chiming in here. For any novice/intermediates you'd probably be better off keeping a neutral spine. Those with some mass and training experience can have thoratic rounding with much issue as long as the lumbar spine maintains neutrality. Another issue with the choice to round is that it makes locking out the lift more difficult.

Fuck no. The guy should be doing grip training. Do slightly lower weight deadlifts and try to hold the bar as long as possible. Put in some heavy db rows, even some hammer curls with clenching your fist as hard as possible.

Starting with mixed grip that early on is a recipe for bicep tears on the underhand arm.
