any medfags here?
during a heavy lift when you hold your breath and build up very high pressure, can this damage your brain?
No. It's safer because you're maintaining the same pressure throughout the movement. You generate the high pressure as you're bracing for the lift and don't let go until after you're done with the lift. Exersise induced aneurisms only happen if you're obese, if that. Fit people usually have better cardiovascular health than regular people too.
This is also described in Starting Strength.
it's called the valsalva maneuver and it's the recommended way to lift... but you can pass the fuck out doing it

I've almost done this when deadlifting max. Need to grab onto something so I don't fall over.
>>36528978
I have always done it naturally
but still, I wonder if it can cause brain damage
I looked on google scholar and havent really found any studies on valsalva maneuver and brain damage

only been lifting a few months and started thinking about this. thanks OP 1 less thing for me to worry about in the gym.
Sorta related question:
My dad just found out he's got a bad heart valve. Doc said cardio is good, but he can't do anything that involves straining. I suppose because spiking his blood pressure would cause blood to flow backwards through his bad valve.
Is there any way he can strength train? I figured if he didn't Valsalva and kept breathing freely throughout the movement he should be OK. Of course that would necessitate using light weight (baby).
What you think?

I think you should consult a cardiologist.
>>36529315
Yeah, he's got one. They said he's free to do anything as long as he's not straining. I guess I just wish we had a more specific definition of "straining"
Hey everybody, murse here. When patients with history of cardiac problems (Cardiac arrest, Stroke, etc.), they are advised against using the valsalva maneuver. That's why they need a diet with high fiber, because lots of people die shitting.
It doesn't directly answer your question, but hope it helps.

Yes you have to stop any heavy lifting inmidietly trust me im a doctor

shoo shoo
>>36528914
it can damage your butthole if you don't tense it. At least that's what pavel claims in the naked warrior; gives ya hemroids.
>>36528914
No unless you have a history with vascular issues.
>>36529301
I think your father should listen to the doctor, and not to anonymous 4chan posters.

In theory, yes. But it will be because you have some pre-existing aneurysm or other anomaly. I've never heard of somebody dying or having a stroke because they did a deadlift.
You can blow blood vessels in your nose out. I'd imagine if you have aneurysm it could possibly cause it to blow.
At least you'll die lifting some heavy fucking weights

Don't panic, Dad is in very good hands. His PCP is at Vanderbilt and referred him to top notch specialists.
Honestly I was just asking mostly for my own edification. Does lifting *without* holding the breath increase blood pressure? Does breathing throughout the lift mitigate the blood pressure spike?

>Does lifting *without* holding the breath increase blood pressure?
Yes.
>Does breathing throughout the lift mitigate the blood pressure spike?
Yes.
>>36530253
I wish there was a way to determine by how much breathing throughout a lift decreases the blood pressure spike.

Awesome, thank you anon. May your lifts be strong and may you lift long. No homo tho ofc
