But you're not going to get on results doing that.

Depends on where you are right now. If you can do them easily in one set, then it's a pretty bad idea. If you can do them in four sets to failure, then it might be a very good idea. Also, don't listen to >>36443742, you'll of course make some progress. You'll gradually be able to do more and more push-ups. You can and should make the exercise harder by moving your arms closer to your center of mass though.

Also, you want to look into other exercises as well. You at least need to do rows or pull-ups to have something for your back.

it is a good idea if your target is being able to do more push ups, gaining very little muscle mass.
