For machines that are hinged, you will only be lift about half the weight if the weight was distributed evenly across the machine. In this case, you are lifting virtually all of the weight of the plates near your hands, while the 4 that are resting atop the fulcrum are contributing a negligible amount of weight to the exercise. You could benefit a lot more if you could find a way to add more weight near your hands, but otherwise you have virtually maxed out the machine. I suggest you start using it one handed instead of stacking more weight on the far end.

The other major criticism of machines is that they remove the need for stabilization. While this is true, there is a much greater need for stabilization when the weight is in a position of unstable equilibrium (e.g. the press, bench press, squat. so called "pushing" exercises). Rows and deadlifts, on the other hand, place the weight in stable equilibrium, so the need for stabilization is much less (mostly just keeping yourself from falling over, rather than balancing the weight).

In short, ignore all these haters. That is a fine piece of equipment to use.

if you're lifting, just get some Chuck Taylor's all stars (not the "Version 2" bullshit, the original). flat sole, incompressible, maximum force applied to the ground.
