Don't you feel ashamed?

ashamed I don't do one of the most damaging exercises to your joints? next you're gonna try to shame me for not squatting.
>>
>decide to run
>first day, half a mile
>second day, one mile
>third day, immediate shin splints

Fucking hell, and now I'm afraid to even try again. It's been like 4 days and my legs start hurting whenever I have to powerwalk, jog for the bus, etc.
>>

Stop over striding
>>
>>36115470
I had a massive problem with shin splints, what seems to have fixed them (touch wood) was running on grass for a month, and doing calf raises with weights.

It's funny, I used to have tiny calves, but now after all the strengthening shit they're pretty big
>>
>>36115342
Everyone can run 5km. Its easy as shit
Unless youre a huge hamplanet

>>36115594
This. I just refuse to believe there are people in their 20s in the normal weight range that can't run 5km. I don't care whether you need an hour, but everybody should be able to do 5 km.
>>
>>36115643
>an hour

Wouldn't that be walking

>>

I was in CC freshman year of high school up until junior class. It was a great introduction to cardio for me and to this day I'm still able to run 5-6 miles after not training for a month or so. I've kicked up the cardio lately tho, preparing for the airforce.
>>
>>36115670
Sure, I walk at that speed, but running is not determined by your speed, but by the way you move forward (generally: As long as one feet always touches the ground, it's walking. If both feet are in the air at some point, it's running)
>>
>>36115619
THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST THING EVER

FUCK RUCKING

I SWEAR RUCKING SUCKS FUXKINF DICK.

You're tired after 100 meter, dying after 500 meter, leaving humanity behind at 5k+ and you just walk in the pain zone until the 25/30 k are over for the night/morning.

Fucksake I did so much rucking thinking about it hurts. And not just the beta m-much 30kg b-backpack boys. No the full 65kg topped off water supply time to die backpack+vest.

You don't understand suffering until you've done rucking. It's horrendous.

Switch to elliptical machine until it goes away.
Elliptical will blast your calves.
Start taking calcium supplement.

I do not understand what this means.. Running three miles can literally be nothing depending on pace. I know powerlifters who can run three miles, the only difference is they can't do it fast.

BTW GOMAD and running is one of the best things I have discovered. Mark Rippetoe is a fucking genius, I think I might start SS with running.
>>
I can run 3 miles I just choose not to because I hate it. Bikings way more fun
>>
>>36116174
under 20 minutes Is acceptable I suppose
>>
I've been reading more and more lately, from those in the know that running actually causes a lot of harm to the body/heart and has little, if any benefit.
>>
>>36116253

They aren't in the know
>>
>>36116274

ultras and shit are terrible on the body.
>>
Used to do "road work". At best got to 10 miles with a weight vest. This was years ago. For years Ive done sprints and run stairs. Every now and then I run 3 miles but its after I do pull-ups at 1 park and run 3 miles to another park for more pull-ups. 3 miles is a joke, I get bored. Trust me, sprints and stairs or hills. Look at pro long distance runners, they all have a Somalian body type, its useless.
>>
>>36116274
Don't you think that jumping rope is better though?
>>
>>36116301

In some aspects, it burns calories faster, for one
>>
>>36116301
running is only good based on its intensity, just like jump roping. Sprinting or stairs beats jogging all day. Jumprope at a decent pace with double jumps for at least 10 mins. I do 10 3min rounds on the heavy bag and then 20 mins of jump rope.

"Running 3 miles" means nothing. Anyone can do it with enough time. Now doing it under 20 minutes is respectable.
>>

Who's this mega manlet
>>
>>36115745
desu i cant run that long. i can walk for days though. personally i blame the asthma. but realistically its because im a lazy shit.

It takes me 12 minutes to run around a track 4 times. Is that good?
>>
>>36116806

Depends on the track
>>
>>36115342
i'd rather cycle. i dunno. running hurts my knees too much
>>
i ride my bike 18 miles a day(very hilly). Haven't ran in years though
I'd guess i could run a 5k pretty easily.
>>
>This arbitrary '5 kilometers'
At what speed? Even a hamplanet can do 5k if allowed an hour or two.
>>
>>36116893

>>
>>36115470
You probably don't have real shin splints just are sore/experiencing pains. When you run you get all sorts of weird little pains and stuff that you don't really get doing stuff like lifting. Just go a week more and if it is more than a nuisance it might be something wrong

I can't run 300 meters. I've always had bad exercise induced asthma. Despite working up to 30 minutes a day on an eliptical and doing 5-10 mile bike rides at a fast clip, running is just beyond me. I felt like a damn fool when I got on the treadmill at uni last week and was dying after 3 minutes.
>>
>>36115769

would much rather ruck than run anyday
>>

quarter mile not good

>Don't you feel ashamed?

Can't help it.. I have asthma that kicks in. I can do a sprint but after that my throat is like a straw and I just can't breathe proper for a while.
>>
>>36115470

am i to understand you ran 3 days in a row? after never having ran consistently before?

also stop running on concrete
>>
>>36115342
I had 4 surgeries on one leg over the course of three years due to sporting injuries leaving me with multiple arthritic joints in my 20s. I could care less about running long distance.
>>
>>36116253

What's a decent 3 mile time for a
girl
? I'm asking for... a friend.
>>
>>36121614
Under 30 min is passable
Under 23 min is no longer DYER
>>
>>36115342
Every old person I know that ran long distance, marathons, triathalons, all end up with bad feet and hip or knee replacements and verbose veins. I'd rather not, there's other ways to get healthy.
>>
Went running yesterday and my lower back got all stiff and it made the whole run uncomfortable as fuck. I'm afraid if I keep running despite the stiffness thing I'll cause some damage.Does this have to do with the fact that I run on concrete or do I just need more core exercise?
>>
Just returned from a run. 2 miles at a steady pace, no sign of muscle fatigue. Had to abort the run because of a sharp lung pain. Wat do? Still coughing up now.
>>
>>36121658

>>
>>36122615
Start running on the grass next to the road or just go off-road entirely. Going for a run in the woods is great. Also, off-road running requires you to balance a lot more, which will strengthen your core to some extent as well.
>>
Been running a 5k a week for the last month.
First was 30min
Second 28
Third 26:20
Fourth 26:10

How do i keep from tappering off? I'm 210lbs and I'm sure that time will go down once i start losing weight.
>>
My mile time is like 14 minutes. :(
>>
>>36123170

Is it a stitch? If so, next time breathe more, somewhat faster than you feel like you need to.

If it's not a stitch you may need to see a doctor
>>
>>36123562

You will taper. There are limits to how fast you can run, and further practice will give you diminishing returns. But you are still a ways off from any sort of physiological limit. Just keep running
>>
>>36123578
Are you walking?
>>
>>36123578
Dont listen to these shitters
just try to cut it down by 30 seconds to a minute every run

Can anyone give me some running tips
>>
>>36115342
Why are runners always shaming people who can't run as far as them? 6'4 people can't run LONG DISTANCE. My ankles and knees can't handle the pain, even when I was 14 (yes I was 6'4 at 14, I was a full grown man since about 13 somehow)

Good for you, you can run really far. But for anyone that is tall or weights a significant amount most likely the join pain will stop them before they ever run out of breath.
>>
>>36115643
Well of course someone can WALK 3 miles but OP said RUN.
