If you have trees, you can also collect the chicken shit, compost it for a bit, then feed it to your trees. Also, you can arrange your chickens to eat bugs they find around your trees if you are into the whole no pesticide thing.
Then you get organic chicken gains and organic fruit gains all while keeping your organic free range egg gains. Living on a farm is pretty sweet; animals and machines do all the work for you, so you can focus on working out, writing some novel, raising your wife's kids, or whatever you're into.

Well if you have land (hard part for city plebs), your chickens become a part of your machine that makes money for you.
Their eggs you can eat / sell / make more chickens with, which makes you money. They themselves can be eaten or sold to make you money. They also eat bugs and shit on your trees, which makes your trees more fertile, and contributes to better fruit yields, which make you money.
Get some doges if you have a farm though, dogs will prevent the coons and coyotes from getting your chickens.

Before I had chickens if i walked across my lawn i would find two to three ticks crawling up my leg.
After chickens, no ticks. I used to let them run free in the summer during the day. So really didn't have to feed them. A neighbor dog killed one so only let them out supervised. Trying to build a large mobile pen for them this spring. That wan i can leave them in the pen and move the pen around to different parts of the yard.
