As for your question, I think looks are genetic. We all knew that one "ugly family" at school, right? As for good looks, one component of looks is generic (goid proportions, symmetry, etc) and another component is sex specific. That's why Rumer Willis looks so ugly, she got her dads masculine features.

People tend to compliment each other. I.e. opposites make beautiful kids. The best looking kids in my hometown (one of the girls was a model, the son married one of the prettiest girls from our town) had a stereotypical skinny dorky white nerd dad who a telecoms engineer who looked exactly like an 80s era nerd, and a huge fat stereotypical black momma. The kids were these physically perfect specimens because their parents genetics complemented each other perfectly.
