You should only start cutting when you hit 1/2/3/4. Anyone else agrees?
>>
Do you even lift?
>>

You should cut if you're over 15% bf. No exceptions.

Health > arbitrary lifting stats
>>

Agreed.
Permabulk retards need the gas.

What do you mean with 1/2/3/4? Plates?
>>

honestly this >>35111809
just start lifting at 10%bf Aushwitz mode and clean bulk until you hit 1/2/3/4. If done correctly you should never go above 14-15% bf. Never bulk above 15%

I think you're way over 15%. Pic related is me, 14,7% bf. Should I go ottermode or should I go bulk?
>>
17% is the optimal bf level for gains/health/sanity, if you're carrying a lot of muscle ofcourse. Skinny fats should cut or bulk.

It's not constant bulking lol, just eat a slight excess and train on an intelligent program for a couple years. I went from 150lbs to 180 in 2 years staying lean
>>
>>35113264
Dirty bulked until around 20% bf and was able to hit 1/2/3/4. Now Im at 11% and Im still able to do 1/2/3/4. Anyone saying don't go past 15% is never making it.

>cutting with your muscle mass

You're setting yourself up for a continuous cycle of "Omg I'm above 15% better cut" then gain 20lbs, then cut again, etc. You'll lose muscle every time you cut and you won't get anywhere. Just bulk for a whole year, don't give a shit about getting a little fat, gain enough muscle to make cutting worth it, then cut.
>>
Am I the only one who thinks a higher body fat looks best on men who have muscle on them? 20% tends to be the golden area.
>>
>>35114885

>>
>>35114885

>>
>>35114813
How manlet? 172lbs if your under 6ft is pretty solid imo
>>
>>35114627
Personally I would bulk. Marty fusaro talks about the need for more lean bodymass when skinny fat and how cutting will just make you skinnier but still bad looking.
But I'm not super concerned with being lean so you may prefer a cut.
>>
>>35114885
I measured the shit out of my body fat, using everything from machines to calipers. They all say 20 percent, but i think i look fat as fuck. I am 240 lbs and 6 foot 1. My stats are 350 lb squats for reps, 265 bench for 3 by 5 and just got to 4 plate deadlift, but i dont train it much. I used to be much fatter, and i do have stetch marks, which may make it look worse. Is it possible with those stats to actually only be 20 percent or am i lying to myself. At this weight should i be much stronger to be fit.
>>
I weigh 173 and i'm 5'8

Probably 20% bf or a bit more

My lifts are currently

Squat 255x5
Dead 295x5 (i know)
Bench 200x5
OHP 137.2x5

Still making almost weekly progress.

I've always had the problem of 'do i bulk or do i cut' but I've decided to just keep on going until I hit 1/2/3/4 .

>>
>>35114659
ayy love /fat/ sometimes
tell aanyone who isn't obese to bulk lel
>>
>>35117266
I'm the guy above your post-
I mean for 1 rep maxes when I say 1/2/3/4.
My deadlift max has been tested at 420 lbs, OHP at 130 lbs, low bar squat at 315 lbs and bench at 200x1.

More recently I've done high bar Oly squats at 280 and 290 for doubles and OHP at 120 for 5.

Even if you don't test maxes like I haven't on squat and OHP, it's easy to extrapolate a max by adding 15-30 pounds to your OHP 5 rep max and 30-40 pounds to your squat 5 rep max
>>
The formula I use to calculate projected maxes is this: (0.033 * number of reps * weight lifted) + weight lifted = one rep max

This formula comes within 2-3% of my true max on all the big four lifts as well as pull ups, rows, most isolation exercises.

It wasn't as accurate for my power cleans, but I'd imagine that that's due to less strict and honed form.
>>
Alright guys, here I am, just made my first of these pics. pls no bull, heh.

Just been bulking. I know I've got a bit of fat (prolly 20+%), but fuck it, I'm not bothered by it.... right?

Gonna cut when I hit 1/2/3/4 for 5 tested. Just a matter of time.

How long did it take you guys to hit 1/2/3/4?
>>
>>35117661
139 pound 5'8" guy once again;
It took me 12 months to hit 3/4, 13 months to hit 1 plate ohp and at 18 months I have yet to hit 2 plate bench
>>
>>35117877
yeah, but I've got 30 lbs on you, so I would hope to hit it much sooner.

mirin' ottermode btw
>>
>>35117917
Most of those 30 pounds are fat, so you'd really be about my weight if you were lean

My triceps are pitifully weak and small compared to my shoulders which largely contributes to my presses being weak.

I don't know what your rate of progression is on deads and squats, but you could hit 3 and 4 plate within the next 2-3 months
>>
>>35114586

>Anyone can get there in a couple years

If you can't 1/2/3/4 after 4-6 months on a strength program just give up lifting lmao

I don't think I'll ever reach 1/2/3/4. My squat is so utterly mediocre that it barely surpasses my bench. All my other lifts are literally days away from progressing into 1/2/3/4 though.

>>
>>35115853
Really? I'm 6'1 and about that and I'm skelly as fuck. Surely 2 inches less at the same weight wouldn't look that much better
>>
>>35111809
I agree.

For calisthenics it's acceptable to cut as well. I got to 162 last week, but I'm down to 158 now. Every bit counts for one arm chin up
>>
>>35118045
Same man, I squat 205x5 and I don't feel like I'll ever hit 315 for reps. I honestly don't care though; you don't need to squat more than 225 for reps (8-10) for decent legs
>>
Rule of thumb is bulk any time you're under 25% body fat, cut when you go over. This will give you maximum gains over the long term, then you can simply cut down to 15% when you have the body you want
>>
>>35118083
You could cut or bulk and either way you'd be fine if you really haven't made any large gains yet.
If you feel fat, start cutting until you don't. That's my advice for you.

Thanks man! yeah i am lifting, im eating at a decent deficit (1200-1300 cals) rn so im pretty sure im not going to gain that much muscle mass. I had a shitty/decent foundations thanks to hockey, rugby, and soccer but i was covered in fucking fat so i decided to just stop being a manchild.
>>
>>35119203
Yes, I do a lot of strength training, but it isn't the specific program or rep range that has resulted in me looking this way.

Let me lay out the reasons why I am not as big as you'd expect-

1. I didn't bulk consistently because I didn't want to get too fat- I was a distance runner when I began lifting, and am a sprinter now

2. Certain muscle groups in particular lag behind, such as triceps, because my bench press and overhead press are chest and shoulder dominant

If I had started out at a lean 8% bodyfat, 115 pounds, I could have bulked all the way to 150 pounds 12% bodyfat without stopping, perhaps, but this wasn't the case. So I had to take a more circuitous, slow route to get to where I am now.

You cant work it out?

>referring to 3 plate
>140kg is 3plate
>140lbs is 1 plate
>>
>>35120871
I assume you mean kilos.

You should be able to hit 140 kg for a single once you can hit around 117kg for 5 reps.
You will likely need to be capable of 110 kg for a 5x5 with minimal slowing of bar speed and little to no form breakdown.

It should be anywhere from 1-6 months. That depends on your past rate of progress, recovery/lifestyle, diet, training frequency and overall volume.

perhaps you need to stop grinding out weights that are too heavy every single squat session and work with 2/3 or 3/4 of your working weight for fast, powerful low volume sets.

Then on one or two days per week, use maximal, 80-100%, of your maximum, for less reps.

Try to hit between 30-70 total reps of squats per week.

Again, it is key that NOT ALL of your squat sessions be overly taxing. You shouldn't have to grind through to failure every session, or often for that matter.

if you bulk from skinnyfat you only become a bigger version of a skinnyfat, or just fat. It doesn't fucking make sense because you'll have to cut for a fucking year straight later. This is primarily aimed at beginners so pay attention.

When you stall on your lifts you have three choices - eat more, increase your volume work, fix your technique.

>Eat more
This is unsustainable over a long period of time. The increased glycogen can give you the push to lift the weight that has been giving you problems but as soon as you return to your normal eating parts you are toast. Either that or you start perma-bulking which is stupid.

>Increase Volume
You can jump on 2-a-day training but again, how long will this last? A month? Two?

>Fix your technique
This is what you should do. I want to make the distinction between proper form and proper technique. For the squat your proper form is to hit competition depth. If you turn the squat into a good-morning but still hit your depth that's proper form.

However, this is awful technique. Proper technique simply means positioning yourself in such a way as to put yourself in the strongest position and to maximise your leverage.

Fortunately for you, this is relatively easy to fix and you will gain the most bang for your buck. Identify a lift you are technically weak and spend an afternoon just practicing the different aspects.
