If you are a beginner to training and not putting on muscle, you're not eating enough, escpecially if you're younger. 'But I'm eating loads', you're not eating enough.

Putting on muscle is 90% diet. Eat eat then eat some more. Then eat.

I definitely did, but I gained 30 pounds and probably 20-25 was fat.

All I'm saying is that "if you're young and getting stronger you can't eat too much" isn't really true, or at least isn't practical. It takes a long time to diet all that fat away without muscle loss.
