All the science indicates that total hypertrophy comes from total volume (sets*reps*weight). In SS you increase the volume on every muscle every session.

Sure a lot of the 'gains' are made in technique and motor unit recruitment but wouldn't you rather have that than not have it?

Truth is, nobody looks good after 6-12 months of natty lifting. Muscle growth is a very slow process; you'd be lucky to get half a pound a week with average genetics.

As far as 'aesthetics' are concerned, leanness, lighting and muscle insertions are far more important than actual mass.

Hypertrophy happens when you have a high number of sets to or close to failure. You can train heavy and get hypertrophy, you can train the more typical 'bodybuilder' rep ranges and get hypertrophy. You can't do 50 rep sets of babyweight and get big, and at a certain point you can't get stronger without adding muscle.

While that is true, it is significantly harder to get as much volume from low rep sets than it is from "bodybuilder rep ranges." Even if you manage to do 5x5 with your heavy ass sets, you're still nowhere near the volume of a typical brosplit... and SS is 3x5.

Obviously your strength will gradually increase when you train for hypertrophy, the opposite is not true (and that strength gain will be much slower). Someone training for only strength can remain DYEL looking forever.
