As seen on the /fit/ girls threads, the general public doesn´t like women with muscles. Being muscular is a macho trait.
But apparently things are changing since many people are complaining how the new wonder woman is too skinny for the role.
To be honest it's pretty unreasonable to expect a woman to "get in shape" for a role that requires a muscular physique in the same way as a man.
Actors usually have a year or so to prep for a role. If a male actor is skelly at the start of that year, he can feasibly get a respectable physique in that year for a shirtless scene. If the role requires a truly impressive physique, he can be given steroids.
For a woman, it's not so simple. Naturally, women build muscle at like a quarter the rate of guys. A fat woman can lose a lot of weight in a year, but a skinny woman can't build much muscle. You can't really get women on roids, either, since no sane actress would agree to do that. Steroids can have a permanent masculinizing effect on women's faces, which is why so many female bodybuilders look like dudes in drag. When your career is partially dependent on your looks, you're not gonna agree to do something that has a high probability of permanently damaging them.
Basically, if you have a female character who is supposed to look both muscular and feminine/pretty, you either need to forget the muscular part, or cast one of the few actresses who have been working out with the aim of building muscle for multiple years.

That's flat out wrong. They usually have 1-5 months max. A whole year is a rare case and is usually reserves for actors who know a sequel is coming ala Jackman as Wolverine

It's impractical. As mentioned, it would take months of hard work to get "big" as a woman for what is a niche role in a movie that probably doesn't sell great (female superhero/army/etc movies don't sell well typically). Furthermore, being attractive in a film is 1000x more important than character accuracy for women, much like how women will be cast to play starving or eating disordered characters but won't actually lose weight to do so. It would be unattractive. So not only does it take months of work for ONE movie part, but they would have to promptly lose muscle + weight ASAP afterwards if they wanted another film role. It's just not seen as desirable or attractive for women to be big, even if it makes sense for the character.
