Get one of those floatation boards first.

The first thing is learning to relax and float. This may be difficult to impossible depending on your height, chest size and muscle mass. If you're short, small chest or have some muscle you may well sink. I'm tall with a barrel chest and the moment I gained any muscle I went into sink able territory so be aware. But this is also part of the reason you have something to help you float.

Hold onto the edge of the pool and try to relax until you feel your legs become a little buoyant. Floating is mostly relaxing and keeping your lungs somewhat inflated. Then you can practice some kicking. Once you're comfortable kicking hold onto the float in front of you or under your chest (or whatever is comfortable) and just start propelling yourself with your feet. Once you've got that down try treading water (same movement but you propel yourself upwards to keep yourself upright in the water). You can then move on to learning the arm movements for the crawl while having legs strong enough to swim with a long.

No money for that and it would be easier to just learn at my own pace.

Seriously it wouldn't.

You would need a handful of lessons to get up to speed.

You would actually do the volume necessary to grease the groove etc.

But if you do it yourself, you could end up with terrible technique, which would take forever to unlearn. And you would probably not do enough swimming to make anywhere near the improvements lessons would give.

Shit isn't expensive. You don't need an Olympic coach. Just ask at your local pool. Hopefully they don't get you swimming with kiddies in their swim school. But there should be an adult class too.

But it still be a lot easier if you have someone spot your mistakes
