Would it be retarded not to bench press? Let's say I work on a texas method setup, and instead of alternating bench and OHP, I just OHP every week. If I do pec deck or flyes 2-3x a week as an accessory to this, will my physique look shite?
>>
No, it wouldnt.

But not squatting or deadlifting IS retarded.
>>
>>34928122
But why though?
>>
>>34928129
Because its a fucking meme lift
>>
>>34928128
Of course, I will continue to squat and deadlift.
>>34928129
I just hate bench pressing and I thought it might be easier to progress OHP training the lift more often. Despite that I'm better at OHP than bench, personally my arms and shoulders lag more than my chest
>>
>>34928122
Retarded? Depends on your goals
At least do DB Bench. Why not?
>>
I dropped bench due to a labrum tear. I do weighted dips and OHP 2-3x weekly. My chest isn't nearly as full after dropping bench. Hate to say it.
>>
>>34928122
I do decline and inline no flat press.
>>
>>34928144
above explain, but to add a little more I was running TM last year before I cut and I was using a template where you alternate Benching and Pressing VD&ID each week, but I was feeling like I wasn't getting enough volume on either lift overall compared to my squat or DL. I cut some weight and then tried out 5/3/1 to see if it is a more balanced program but I actually don't like it very much and I'm having a harder time progressing my deadlift and ohp. So, I think I would like to go back to TM, and I was thinking training OHP every week would be a good idea this time around
>>
>>34928122
do both, they both work different areas of the chest. if you only do one, it'll start looking weird and imbalanced when you actually start getting big.
>>
>>34928142

In my experience, bench (or at least a bench variant) is really useful for getting your press up. I got my best press gains pressing twice a week (once strict, once push pressing) and benching once. Pressing 3/wk ended up being slower.

Although I guess you could switch them around with TM, focus on pressing with bench on the easy day.
>>
>>34928139
You wouldn't drop pepe, op....
>>
>>34928122
yes because it's a very good exercise

but if you have to because of an injury then you can drop it, and do lots of weighted dips and weighted chin-ups in place of benching, while you continue to The Press every other workout. you shouldn't The Press more frequently than that though.
>>
>>34928160
?OHP does not work chest? And I'd say I'm already moderately big t.b.h. f a m

Just do dips
There is nothing that bench press does that dips don't do, and you can still train them heavy as fuck.

Dips and ohp there you go.
>>
>>34928170
also bill starr wrote an article on improving your The Press. since you'd drop benching i guess it might be more useful to orient your goals around The Press instead of both The Press and bench press

http://startingstrength.com/articles/stronger_press_starr.pdf

but again, there's no good reason to remove bench pressing if you aren't prevented from doing it by an injury. it provides better strength development than any of it's substitutions

If i have big calves and quads from genetics/being an ex fatty, should I still squat and deadlift?
>>
>>34928199

>implying that's me
>implying this is not the peak of horizontal pushing strength
>>
>>34928242
I personally don't as my legs look hyooj compared to the rest of my body, but /fit/ will probably have a seizure if you tell them that you don't squat or deadlift
>>
>>34928232
thanks for the article, I'll read it right now. My goals are aesthetic and athletic development, not powerlifting, which is why I'd even consider this in the first place
>>
>>34928235
I don't know if you're genuinely fedora-ing or ironically fedora-ing. The fedora meme has gotten too convoluted, it is impossible to decipher anymore.
>>
>>34928242
Don't hijack my thread you fucking fuck
>>
>>34928250
eh well i've been just doing cardio for 6 months to cut and i just started lifting recently. i have freakishly huge calves and my quads are relatively large so i don't think squats are necessary. what does deadlifting work in the body, is it core strength? maybe i should do that
>>
>>34928262
read the sticky and pls do not hijack my thread

Try benching your body weight in pounds on two bosu balls, and throw the barbell and clap your hands then catch it. Actually it's more weight since the angle of the arms is changed from 90 degrees to 40.
>>
>>34928261
>>34928267
you've gotten plenty of answers and I just wanted to ask one question while the topic was here

stop being an autist, jesus christ
>>
>>34928261
You already got an answer to your fucking question, what more do you want?
>>
>>34928254

Bench is still really useful for athletic purposes - its very rare that you're pushing straight up rather than at an angle, so the pec strength helps a ton. Although obviously it can be replaced with equivalents.
>>
>>34928242
Yeah. You don't have to go crazy on them but it is just never a good idea to intentionally allow a huge strength imbalance in your body.
>>
>>34928275
>>34928276
not meaning to start an interwebz fight, your question is just fairly common and is addressed in the sticky and I could not really find any information on mine out there, so I was wanting to have a more in depth programming discussion with anons here
>>
>>34928294
my question was basically a yes/no. it wasn't a hijack in the least. chill out man, its not like the board prunes threads within minutes
>>
>>34928294
Nigga don't act like your question isn't just as common. Do you know what Google is? Are you even fuck? I'm not even the guy who asked the question, but your autism is really irking me.
>>

>would it be retarded not to bench press

i see no difference here you sperg
>>

>>34928315
if you dont want to kick it with autists, /fit/ is not the place you want to be
>>
>>34928315
why not? they are different exercises and many would argue that squat and DL are in a higher tier than bench
>>
>>34928341
i'm talking about the nature of asking the question, not the actual exercises

watch the beginning of this senpai. you don't need to watch the part about fixing your form unless you think you need it, but the beginning is really interesting.
>>
>>34928122
no. just do dips, ring dips, weighted dips etc
>>

that was very interesting, thank you anon
bet you knew I was a secret rip dickrider from wanting to only ohp :^)

Only for a handful of movements like javelin. OHP is the more functional by far. It's not often that you're pushing with your back against something slightly downwards but mostly out I'm front.
>>
only reason i hate bench is because i have to ask for a spotter
>>
>>34928129
Not him, but I was considering the same thing because I lift by myself and dont have a spotter.
I failed a rep of bench and tried to do the roll of shame but just ended up dropping it on my right hip. It feels fucking dented.
