A gym that offers both weightlifting and power lifting is opening in my town. I've been lifting for almost a year and want to start competing in a sport.

When progress slows down in PL its a real mental drain for me because all you can do is eat more, sleep more, and psyche yourself up to pull fucking harder. WL is really fun because of how technical it is. Even if you hit a plateau, the magic of hitting a heavy single never goes away. You rarely fail lifts in PL because the lift only gets easier past the sticking point (which is at the very beginning of power-lifts.) But in WL, everything has to go right for that bar to stick above your head, and when you get it you feel like some kind of artistic performer.

You can technically train for both if you program carefully. If you want to be successful, you'll have better chances with PL, although if you are dedicated enough and the new gym comes with a knowledgable coach, you could go with OW as your main squeeze. If anything you can cycle between PL and OW focuses phases of training.

you will never be good in WL unless you are a turbomanlet and/ or have been training from birth. Also WL almost always requires a coach because of how technical it is. PL on the other hand is very easy to get into and you can get pretty far without a coach. As long as you avoid lolfeds PL can be pretty rewarding.
