The zweihander is the ultimate defensive sword. Bodyguards would carry this and fend off 6 people at once using smaller swords with the massive range of motion
However, what if there was a way to combine the zweihander with a smaller sword at the hilt, so one could actually score kills? What style of sword and swordfighting would synergise with the zweihander?

Hema belongs on /asp/ I've trained a little Montante in a few workshops and it is absolutely formidable they clean through the strongest longsword guards with ease.
They're light at about 4-5kg but a good shoulder workout regardless.

No they were not. Guards used spears and halberds, with one-handed swords as a side-arm.
Zweihanders had very little use, and most of it seemed to be on pike confrontations.
They are not good defensive weapons.
Landsknecht were not guards, they were mercenary and most of them were pikemen.

Mercenarys can be guards and guards are very often mercenarys but everything you're saying is a massive simplification of history. 'Big two handed swords' are every bit as good as people think or at least I think so having had the good fortune of doing workshops with some of HEMAs best Montante practitioners and although no one ever spars at full speed with montante I've done some light sparring against a montante with a longsword and although I was about as skeptical as you beforehand I can tell you that even a moderate strike from one can break even the strongest longsword guard. Wether your arms or the flex of your blade breaks first (not literally).
What your sayings about Pike formations is an assumption gleened from comparing renaissance warfare to ancient formation fighting were swordsmen with sword like the Rhomphaia and they were right to say so as a Greatsword will be equally good at defending flanks of units as they did at defending individuals, cannons and standards.

This is Matt Galas up to his usual antics displaying how the Montante sources teach the use of a greatsword. Huge crowd controlling swings that built up lots of momentum (this is where the power to break guards comes from not the weight as they tend to only be about 4kg).
Those sources were entirely describing the use of montante by bodyguards in a civilian setting by the way.
To keep it moderately /fit/ related this sort of drilling is about their most useful application in HEMA to build coordination and shoulder strength/conditioning.

In fairness they're not that heavy at about 4 to 5kg. Only compared to other swords which rapiers are also pretty heavy among themselves, certainly among the most shoulder exhausting since they're held at arms length.
They'll clean through ANY sword aswell except maybe another montante (I can't bring myself to call them 'Zweihander').
I've actually seen a friendly sparring match between a Montante instructor and a rapierist and in a sporting setting they wind down to quite similar winding from the bind sort of fencing (poking at eachother with swords touch :^) ).
Like this example of Victorian historical fencing not that this is any credible source of their original use.
That said the montante isn't for dueling it's crowd control.

I have very little experience with rapier or rapier in dagger but from what I've observed in competition rapier alone is better than rapier in dagger. Not for any reason but mans hubris though.
Guys tend to want to get dat sweet dagger hit and usually throw away their reach advantage to get it.
Rapier saw their place on the battlefield for a little while just the way the montante did but I'm not in this thread to argue the best sword, infantry or anything. Just keep you fella's right while you do :^)

People train with montantes at my club, I'm not unfamiliar to the weapon, I see it all the time.
And longswords and rapiers don't have a difficult time against montantes. At all. Being able to "break a longsword guard" means nothing as the guards are not defences. In fact, most of the guards in Fiore do not even have the sword in front of you. Only guard you would benefit from "breaking" is the posta breve but only kendo fencers tend to stay on that one. You're not gonna "break" a posta di donna or dente di cinghiale. And let's not even get started with the rapiers. Any attempt to "break" a rapier guard will get you stabbed.
Swordfighting is about blade length and agility, and montantes are pretty long but lack on the other department. And no, I'm not talking about "blade speed", you can accelerate any type of blade to a high speed but that does not make the weapon agile.

Unfortunately we're sitting a bit far apart to have a quick spar and get to the bottom of this so it's a pointless argument but if you ever get the chance to spar a montante guy I reccomend it as an enlightening experience.
Rapiers are ideal dueling weapons and always frustrating opponent as range is such a big factor in any striking sport but Greatswords are historys dedicated defensive weapon. It's literally what they're for.
