I have to disagree. Taiji can be incredibly effective for defense.

Like all martial arts there are different regimes of practice. Taiji has five focuses.
>movement and breathing practices (qigong)
>meditation (neigong)
>forms (taolu)
>push hands (tuishou)
>self defense (sanshou)

The first two I consider to be mystical woo and do nothing for the physical practice and self defense, but they're relaxing, so they got that going for it.

The shit you see in movies with the old people standing individually in rows
is the practice of forms. The purpose of this exercise is to ingrain the flow between movements and foot positioning, along with balance and leg development. There's plenty of classes and yoga instructors who've watched a DVD who "teach" this stuff (incorrectly)

Push hands is done with a partner and is exactly what it sounds like. Pushing hands. Like the practice of forms there are prescribed motions that you and the partner practice a hundred times over. A teacher who can instruct in push hands is rarer.

Finally there's the application in defense. Here in the states its difficult to find any teacher capable of conveying this knowledge.

I started practicing with the neighbor when I was ten or so. At that point it was the forms and the two mental practices. When I was 16 he started teaching me push hands and around 20 when he started teaching me sanshou. He passed away at 88 when I was 22, and it took me 2 years in a city of 750k people to find someone who had some stuff to show me.

Three times I've had to defend myself and it's proven effective those three times. (Twice are from my bf being a loudmouth drunk who doesn't know when to shut his fucking mouth, the other when a guy robbing my store lunged at me with a knife)

I'm at the point now where I have some students and friends I teach to varying degrees, along with a weekly senior taiji class at my gradma's retirement home.

It's basically autist-level intense study of body mechanics. Doesn't matter what else you're doing fitness or martial-arts wise, tai chi will enchance the things that you want to be good at.
It's also pretty good for self-defence. (Mental health and forensic worker here)

The claims for oldie health usually stick to balance. Lot of old people fall over and hurt themselves badly so it's actually pretty good.

From what I've seen it's surprisingly good but I still think it'd work better as a kind of accessory to another self defense /martial art type of thing.

I rate it for shoulder health as well, lots of the movements are good prehab exercises.
