Rip up the carpet and put in laminate wood.
After that, model the area around the window as a focal point or a sitting area. Do as much as you can to utilize that window to make the space seem expansive.

Well, I'm renting so I can't rip up the carpet. I'd prefer hardwood floors but the location/amenities/price was pretty good. The building is upgrading most of the rooms with hardwood floors so we'll probably get them eventually.

I was going to say, ask your landlord. I'm pretty sure they would be all in on that as it only raises the value of the unit.
