about to get into the whole process of altering clothing - tapering, hemming, the whole shebang. maybe even making some of my own

start with old clothes that you wont regret on fucking up, like an old pair of baggy jeans to practice tapering and hemming, same with old shirts and t-shirts
for the garment making you´ll need to buy some sort of book to get into some system to make patterns or you can copy the patterns from old clothes by deconstructing and marking each pattern into paper and the you can use those paper patterns to make more garments like the one you copied

take some classes for basic sewing, trust me itll help big time, i was altering my clothes for almost a year before i took a legit class and realized how horribly i was fucking my shit up, and now i an actually make decent wearable articles

for tapering jeans how far up do you generally unseam?

IMO is better to sew first, then try them on, then adjust, preferably all the way trough so it looks more uniform and you dont get weak seam tips where the seam can start ripping, after you´re happy with the fit you cut the excess fabric and if you feel like it you add a bias binding to givee more structure and resistance

well yeah, you can make whole garments by hand but it will be very labour intennsive, one single stitching that usually takes yyou like a minute to do in a sewing machine will take you half an hour by hand, also theres the chance that you dont get the proper thread tension thus making weak seams
investing in a sewing machine is a very good idea, many modern domestic sewing machines are rather cheap and have a lot of functions, like multiple stitching tchniques and even the function to sew buttons
I got this patterned wool sweater, but it's too high contrast for my taste and would like to darken it using black dye. Is it possible to 'layer' the dye so the pattern is still visible and the sweater isn't completely black?
Also, does softening the wool with conditioner really help?

when tapering stonewash jeans, is it going to interrupt the "grain" of the fabric (continuity of the wash)?

not necesarily but you can join the grain flow when taapering but it would be rather hard, specially if the grain is faced to one direction

You should bleach it
Made a first sample for my sweatpants. The topstitching at the waist hem is a bit rough, as I didn't stretch it enough in the beginning, and I don't like how the pants make my hips look wider than they are. But that's the risk of a strong taper.
I got the pattern from the spring edition of La Maison Victor btw. The material is a sweater knit, so it's very soft on the inside.

I was tricked into buying this parka and it's 80% cotton, 10% polyester, 10% autism.
Can I dye it black? I literally have no previous experience in this field and would appreciate any advice. It's a nice jacket, but I don't think I'll be hiding in a tree line anytime soon.

I think you would be able to dye it black but it would be difficult. take off the flag patches when you dye it and sew them back on when you're done.

Currently sitting here with two bottles of RIT ready to throw this bitch in the washing machine.
Here's the catch, I've also got a bottle of bleach sitting next to me as well.
Should I try bleaching the jacket first? Or go ahead with round 1 of dye, see what the result is, and go from there?
If a jean jacket is a very light blue, should I still bleach it before I dye to dye it pink?

Bleaching kind of destroys the fabric so if you like the way it feels now I don't think you should.

Drink the bleach and use the Rit! I don't know about bleaching. I feel like it might remove the pattern (maybe that's what you want) but I'd be worried about damaging the integrity of the jacket
