your analogy fails on multiple counts. first, t-shirts and laptops differ in terms of purpose. fashion is about aesthetics, where laptops have a dimension of utility or performance.
besides the difference in purpose, rick owens doesn't have an equivalent branding as apple. any logos are on the inside of the garment, they aren't visible. RO doesn't have an advertising campaign, the label has grown from word of mouth mostly. there were only a couple ads for his animal fur line, which is extremely niche. and insignificant compared the the advertising blitzkriegs by the likes of household names like D&G, Calvin Klein, etc.
second, a t-shirt from rick differs in measurements (tailoring) and composition (silk+rayon vs generic 100% cotton). what i was talking about was when the hardware between a macbook and any other ultrabook were exactly the same. that isn't the case between a double-layer rick tee and a hanes tee from wal-mart, which differ in measurements and tailoring.
third, rick, or any other designer, offers a full ready to wear line, where hanes is just underwear and basics.

I doubt a non-STEM student runs any software that struggles on a macbook, ignoring the art kids. The most intensive software they're probably using is something docear or latex, or some DB-lookup tool. Or more likely, watching/streaming video.
Hell, most CS undergrads probably aren't even doing anything that requires more than what a macbook offers. At best, it'll be the ITM guys who don't want to dualboot so they run a VM, or using swift or some other graphical-programming environment

I've been getting pretty sick of Macs tbh. It seems like they keep stripping away small things and up making tasks harder as a result.
I got used to not being able to Cut anything, which usually adds an extra step, but what's up with not having any arrows to the left of folders anymore?
Now you have to open each folder individually and constantly switch back between several to move files around. Something that could be done in three clicks now takes about thirty.
