At first glance you can see a big difference in the quality of the zipper pulls and the handle and bottom material. See how the thin plastic herschel handle creases and folds where the leather eastpack is stiff.
Now look where the fabric meets the bottom. The herschel is thin enough to be folded over (to conceal the material) and the seam is exposed. You can also almost see them on the bottom corners. On the east pack, the leather is so thick the seams are buried deep in a crease. That's some thick leather.

Quality of these are shite nowadays. This was originally made in Sweden and the goto backpack for all Swedish kids ages 3-18. I use one my older brother got as a 6 yo in freakin 1989, it will last a century. Today they are made in fing China like everything else and I give them 5 years max. On top of this it has become an unbearable hipster fashion item.

New bag to replace the one that got stolen
I need to carry a couple of devices (2-3 phones and 2-3 tablets) for my job but backpacks are too childish, is this worth coping instead?
So I've been looking for a minimal black bag, with net bottle holder and laptop sleeve, and the best I've found is the jansport digital student after unsewing the patches. I just don't know about the shape of the bag and shoulder straps. Opinions?

I rock a slate one myself, got off CL here in Portland, OR. I don't really hipster, it just makes a perfect size for my work bag for laptop/tools/random things. If you are really self conscious about it's childlike ways, just keep the backpack straps in tight and use it as a carry bag with the handle - problem solved.
I need a basic backpack for going to and from work. Nothing crazy. Would be nice if it could withstand rain, but not necessary because I'll probably use my umbrella and really only have to walk from the parking lot to the entrance. Rugged look would be cool, but again, not completely necessary. Decent pockets for storage would be nice, I usually take all my hygiene stuff (deodorant, Cologne, chap stick, etc.) with me, and usually also shove my lunch in there. Would like to be able to shove books in without it bulging too much. Thanks for any help, love you.

It's called a lash tab. Traditionally they were used as a utilitarian thing, to attach something like equipment and knife sheaths to kayaking bags by connecting them to a bit of webbing.

Notice how this bag has a loop at the bottom? It can also be used to fasten equipment to the outside.
Today most of the sporty ones are made of more durable, weatherproof materials than leather and constructed a bit differently, using built-in webbing and elastic to hold items in place.
On one of my old backpacks, I threaded my shoelaces through a lashtag for going to the gym but it wasn't terribly convenient and felt silly. I think most are not meant to be very functional but could probably hold a carabiner or so.
