Masks are worn for a lot of reasons too, such as anonymity, or keeping your face warm during cold weather, or because you don't want to put on makeup, or just liking how the masks look

I live in Japan and EVERYONE wears these masks to keep from getting sick or getting other people sick when they are sick.

I wouldn't recommend wearing them to look cool here though, everyone will just think you have a cold and will want to avoid contact with you...but I did have an ex who wore them because she had really bad social anxiety and wanted to hide while on the trains.
