>I just wear the rolex my dad gave me when I'm trying to impress people

>I was at the BMW dealership getting my car worked on (recall), and was taking a look at the showroom. A salesman started chatting with me, asking if I was interested in anything. He does the typical probing to find out if I can afford it - asking job, etc. Granted I do make reasonably good money (70k, I'm 25 and don't have a degree) and have an attractive job title (director of technology), but the guy looks at my watch and says, "hey, we have the same watch - good choice!" A few minutes later, he offered to let me test drive a new M4 and waived the credit application they usually require.

>It's weird how people size you up when you walk in with luxury goods on. I was at a Tiffany store about a month ago with my girlfriend to get one of her silver rings cleaned, just some $500 piece that I bought her years ago. Got talking to the clerk, and I see her eye the watch. Five minutes later we're in a private room, the manager is showing us 100k+ rings and offering us champagne. I remember her remarking to us something like, "We get a lot of people who can't afford things coming in here, so we just have to use precaution with who we show these goods to today. We don't want to waste our time or theirs."

>This is just stuff that has happened in the last couple months. The latter gave me a taste of what the 1% must feel like. It was kind of disgusting...but also excellent.

Its an interesting thing to think about. On the one hand, people might be more willing to present you with opportunities. I take my watch/ring off when I go shopping because I like to haggle and don't want them seeing the bling and trying to take me for more than they need to. Depends what youre going for I guess.
>>

Actually some ultra-luxury stores do allow a margin of haggling in my experience if they are family owned.

This particular coat was sold to a gentleman from Qatar for around 10,000 even though it was marked at 13,500.

Tiffany's was actually the first American jewelery store to ban haggling. It's a shame because the markups on jewelery are really quite preposterous today.

It's all about understated wealth. This is what separates the old money, multi-generation rich families, from the new money that may end up broke again within two generations.

Some of the wealthiest people I know are actually completely low profile about their money. This guy I used to know always dressed in basic yet clean clothes, his daily car was not absurdly expensive, and he always had a very calm and easy going demeanor. Just a normal middle class white guy you'd assume.

He also liked to take his family's gulfstream to their estate in the caymans every couple weeks. But you would never even guess that based on his appearance and behavior.

what people don't realize, is once you have essentially limitless money behind you, there is no more need to show it off. Flaunting it would only breed jealousy and hatred. Maybe the salesman at that expensive store is acting nice to you, but in reality he just wants your commission.

maybe that's just the older way of thinking, though.
>>
I drive a shitbox 90s BMW and people think I'm rich.

>wow how do you afford a BMW, anon?

It's 20 years old, that's how. But all people see is the badge and that its in good shape and think it cost me a ton of money.
>>
Is wealthcore the worst meme on 4chan right now?
>>
I wasn't dressed exactly wealthcore, more prep if anything but I was even wearing sneakers (Saint laurent low tennis) with light coloured cords, Ralph Lauren shirt and Jil Sander sweater and Saint Laurent sunglasses, terrible cohesion but it looked somewhat there.

Anyway, my mother still dresses prep and I was way too autistic to dress this way until recently. In just one day, I had a girl ask to come sit next to me in starbucks, then chat to me about the next coming train, then when it turned out I got the wrong train and had to get more money, I had a guy literally run down the street after me asking for change (told the scumbag to piss off) then when I didn't have the correct change for something (I only keep money on my card) the pleasure in his eyes when I had to walk back to withdraw money was ridiculous.

Anyway, it's crazy with the whole perspective thing, though saying that im not a 1%er and it almost makes me feel like a faker dressing like this, despite being raised with it and being able to afford the clothes without even thinking.

>>
I've felt that feeling before, never had anything as overt as what happened in OP's story but some people definitely do act differently around you.

>got sent to famous London schools
>still have the posh English accent
>my schools show up on Facebook
>I used to row (I don't know about America but in the UK it's considered an upper class sport)
>went to university up north, so my accent is even more noticeable
My dad's company went bust when I was 16, we had to sell a lot of what we own and although we're not poor we're just your average middle class family now (mum's an accountant, dad passed away). There were a few particular types of people who suddenly started acting differently when they added me on Facebook or when they (thought) they found out I was upper class and wealthy.

More often than not it was pretty harmless, but still weird. Like people trying to associate with you, assuming things about you and trying to buddy up with you when you just know they wouldn't want to otherwise. There was this girl in our flat, she was also from London and kept name dropping expensive clubs she'd apparently go to and then say things like "isn't it so nice there, anon?" across the table so everyone could hear. She also tried telling me she went to this club called Bijou which is literally the kind of place you'll find Prince Harry, without knowing that you can't get in unless you're a member and it's invite only.

The thing that really bothered me was when people had the opposite reaction. I'm pretty much a massive stoner at university, and you can imagine the types you meet in stoner circles. Not many, but a few people, would just take issue with me simply because of who they (thought) I was. One drunk idiot even started shouting at me saying I can't comment on certain things because I don't know what it's like, acting as if he came from the roughest, poorest background, yet here he is a top 10 university and coming from a middle class family.
>>

Generally there's three kinds of rich people.
1. Wankers like OP who fake it so they can be exploited, just like the second group
2. Retards with a ton of money
3. Actual rich people who don't want to be fucked over and manipulated into spending loads of money for nothing. (i.e. affluent people who know the value of money)

This is purely anecdotical and I've been though each of them.

You dont even need a rolex for such things to happen.

>go to a huge mid level department store
>browse the watch aisles, looking at some cheap mechanical watches
>sales clerk approaching
>you need anything?
>Yeah, I am looking for a new watch, something functional, but not totally cheap
>He moves me away from what I am currently looking at and shows me Casios midrange offerings

3 months later, still have no new watch, had some time to waste in town after a job interview. so go to the same department store.

>dressed in a suit
