I don't take rams as gospel, though I do like his style and ethos, but that tape measure really is horrible. it's pretty much useless for measuring anything that isn't at your desk, secured and under a few feet long. If you're claiming that the tape measure pictured achieves the goal it has, perhaps it should aim a bit higher.

>If you're claiming that the tape measure pictured achieves the goal it has, perhaps it should aim a bit higher.

I'm guessing the design of that tape measure was motivated heavily by aesthetics considering it's a blomus design and it's only like 10 feet long. I've used one before and they're perfectly functional for smaller tasks. So yeah, I think it achieved it's goal, it sacrifices some functionality for aesthetics, but the aesthetics were probably important to the company since they're known for their design.
If all product designers only valued function we'd have a bunch of shit like this.

irregular sizes and heights for all of their nonsense because no proper training
>>
>>9328875

probably has a huge amount of wasted space given that the spherical shape goes to the bottom (which should be flat with minor gripping so it's FUNCTIONAL holy shit). this is "design" with quotes at it's worst. also everything here seems to be sheet metal that is pressed, the way the case distorts with the hex screw tapping is painful, painful like a public restroom toilet paper dispenser kind of sheet metal, and the retaining tab evidently shows no tinkering or designing. *takes seat*

also a lodge skillet (real brand) looks better after years of use

this one hasa stupid chome plated handle that will look like shit in 5 years

the lodge skillet i bought when /ck/ told meto looks better today than it did when i bought it
>>
>>9331342
it's stamped, looks to be brushed stainless

looks to be 4 series by the hue (the one that rusts in standing water) and the magnetic kind aka just a LITTLE bit of nickel in the steel unlike the better 3 series L stuff for low carbon

also it looks like the die in which they stamped the sheet just had an inset for the screw and the horrid designer just used a standard beveled head furniture bolt rather than a machine head bolt

but lets be honest

/fa/ is filled with 18-19 year olds who have never actually drafted, fabricated, or restored anything in their life

so stuff that seems blatantly obvious to people who have hobbies that require building shit and look at it like "oh...thats just badly designed" have that experience

/fa/ does not have the experience of looking at various well designed items.

the just kind of go on flash sale sites and buy anything made in china that looks cool

in their mind if it kind of sort of looks like an apple product than it's great

who's arne jacobsen?!

>the crank arms look cnc'd because how well they attach to the gears but looking closer inspection they're somehow forged and polished

okay you're literally just throwing out buzzwords.

a cnc machine is just a mill okay.
it's a computer controlled mill

so forging, casting and billet are various methods of describing how raw material prior to milling is delivered.

polishing, painting and brushing are various pronouns that described how something was finished

it is entirely possible for something to be a forged, cnc and polished item...

here is an example:

ar-15 lower receivers are forged aluminum

here is how JD machine Tech of san diego California receives it's RAW product, an ar-15 lower receiver forging

the ic!berlin hinge is fucking great in terms of getting functionality right for glasses. fixes so many solutions and doesn't break as easily as the MYKITA hinge. it's a mystery as to why two of the designers of the ic!berlin hinge decided to leave and design a hinge as shitty as the mykita hinge, which leans more on looking good (on the outside) and being able to fit on a thinner package (via the lite collection) than durability

No, bad. Put it down.
That thing is almost non-functional. Form over function creates beautiful, useless art.

It's not a goddam product it's a statement to place carefully in your kitchen.

Phillippe starck wants to be Christopher dresser and alessi sucks big stylised testicles.
Disagree and il fight you irl.
Swear on me mum.
>>
>>9334154
People value different things in their products. Starck clearly values form and play more than function. There's a time and place for both approaches. The sooner you accept that the sooner you'll stop getting your panties in a bunch over people liking things you don't like.

You should pick up, "Usefulness in Small Things" by Kim Colin and Sam Hecht. Plus the introduction by Paul Smith gives it some fashion design perspective.

dieter rams valued function over everything and his designs are beautiful thanks to that
the sacrifice of functionality for aesthetics -especially in the case of that tape measure- isn't necessary, nor beneficial, imo. the tradeoff you describe that's exemplified in the tape measure wouldn't have been necessary with knowledge of or experience with a tape measure, imo
form without function is literally useless garbage
