First off, the shoes really aren't that similar. The Song for the Mute shoes don't have a large ugly rubber sole, and they only appear similar in photos because you probably can't tell that the colour contrast at the bottom is handpainted onto the leather and the wooden sole. I guess in photos they might look like large white soles but if you saw them side by side in real life you'd realise how dissimilar they are.
Secondly, the SFTM shoes are designed in collaboration with/handmade by Andrew McDonald, who has been making shoes for more than twenty years, and they're merely a sportier take on a design he has already produced, pic related, with the side lacing changed and the shoes painted.
Pretty harsh accusation for a brand who is doing so much original/innovative work with fabric. I'd much sooner call Julius a derivative brand (it's not) than I would SFTM.

Durability, touch to the board and support mostly, lot of times you have to choose between durability/support and touch though, since the more padding and thicker the sole, the less touch you have.
Then there are lot of small shit like, the toecap is made from a single piece to prevent tearing, the laces are secured and kinda high on the shoe to prevent tearing and the part you flick with is thicker than normal. Pic related basically does all those things, notice how the holes for the laces are slightly lower than the surrounding fabric?
It makes a difference.

Yeah I think they are, a little tight on around my pinky toe on the left foot but that's a problem in most shoes until they stretch out, I have stupid feet. Feels good on the right foot though. Haven't worn them for longer periods of time yet.

I almost bought this off grailed when he had it up 6 to 8 months ago. He just can't get rid of it because he wants to recoup as much of his regret cop back as he can get back. I got him down to $180 and never followed up because I came to my senses of how "Cool," it may look, but how ugly it the execution to keep it looking "Cool" would be in a fit.
The jacket is dope, but it's not going to mesh very well with the rest of someones wardrobe if their overall aesthetic doesn't support the jackets detailing. Remember this piece is from 2001 and the pics you have actually make it look really heavy wear, since the pigment is so washed out and the inevitable damage is very visible around the edges of the pockets, collar, and seeing these pics makes me not like how the color mish mash takes away from it.

Don't get me wrong the jacket is just so feature heavy with all it's detailing that it just seems to me like the rest of a "fit" would have to be pretty plain for it not to look like you are wearing a million things at once.
I know removing the detachable outer vest eliminates a majority of it's issue, but then you take away what is so eye catching about it.
