I've got the basic HY haircut, and I'm tired of it being so neat everytime I put product in it. I have very thick, straight hair, that slightly waves when I blowdry it. Get some of that old spice matte paste they sell in that red container at wal mart. it's cheap as fuck but it doesn't make it look super neat or whatever, it makes it look like there is no product in your hair but you can style it however you want, messy, whatever.

I've tried a ton of different hair products but only two pomades: American Crew and Murray's. AC doesn't have a lot of hold, unless I'm just supposed to use more. Murray's doesn't shine like pic related, and I've experimented a bit with quantities.
What other pomades are there? I've never seen any in stores or anything other than the two mentioned

I'd recommend American crew ultra matte. It's pretty cheap and holds well with a nice matte finish.

It's just preference. Just short looks more heritage-style, reserved, classic. Goes with a suit really easily.
Buzzed is more modern, street or high fashion style. Designed to catch the eye more, instead of being more gentle like the former. It'd also require regular upkeep, maybe even every few days if you want it a very specific length, but probably every couple weeks or weekly.
Does this look alright?

A couple years ago I buzzed it all off (pic related) and it stood out literally all around my head. I don't have a crown or anything. It lies down a little bit on the back.
Now, I've had my hair relatively longer and been doing a side part thing for a while. But I just got some Murray's and I want to try having short, choppy, kinda messy but with a general direction hair.
Will it be possible to do this with my type of hair, even with blowdrying and strong product? Or is it gonna stick up in the back if short no matter what? Assume that my hair is the absolute worst to control when short
Also, winter's coming for me. Should I just wait until spring to go shorter; does hair length really make a difference on temperature?

I have grown it out plenty. I dunno if you meant with or without product, but without product it still loves to stick up after a few inches. If I buzzed it and let it grow, I probably would have a non-curly jewfro for a while, at least without product. I mean I buzzed it pretty short and even then it looked like I had a fro. Kinda wish I could erase photos and memories of that from existence.

do the back and sides with upstrokes only, keep the comb surface flush with your head and go by the feeling of that as for when you stop going up
if you try and do it visually you will take an absolute eternity and probably fuck it up worse. go by the feeeling and you'll be OK

Had this for a while but I'm really bored of this despite friends/others liking it so I keep it under a hat most of the time. towel dry then sea salt spray before hair drying. If you have really thick hair like mine, you'll need quiet a bit. Scrunch your hair as you dry it upside down, then style without product and spray, alot. Hair drying with the sea salt already in helps create the volume and texture, good luck m8
