I would say it depends on the patch. While some really do have that teen vibe, especially the edgy/angsty ones, there are a few nice ones out there.

Outerwear or lapel of a suit jacket. One or two small ones on a backpack can look okay. Tote bags you can probably get away with up to 5 small ones.
