That didn't seem to discourage a few millions of girls back in the 80s, but I can understand most girls not being willing to put that much effort into their hairstyles nowadays.

Because those styles damage the hair, and women in general are more well versed in haircare than they used to be.
Also it knots the shit out of your hair, and the amount and length of layers needed to get those styles right means that you can only really do those styles, you don't have the option to change it if you're bored easily - you have to wait for it to grow out.
Also I have thick as fuck curly hair naturally and the amount of volume they have at the top of their head would make my hair look like a wig.

My hair naturally looked similar to that when it was longer and it looked nice, people always joked that I looked like I was from the 80's though. I think a lot of people are afraid of looking like they're from the 80's.
