I think the low tops would be a bit better, but I see no issue with that, just make sure your shorts and basic n' stuff
I feel that it works best if you wear it with crew socks extending to above the shoe, basically look like Hunter S. Thompson, or go for a vintage athletic look.
If you're a fit dude (read: quads at least 24 inches) they look decent with shorts and a flattering t-shirt.
They're my go-to shoe when I wear "short shorts" so I don't look like a frat douche.
