You just need a space, projector, screen and chairs really. Not that much overhead at all if you're getting the space free, make the tickets free and just sell beers or something.
it's a much bigger deal if you're not running it illegally/grey area, it costs like $500 to purchase a 1-2 day license to screen most movies, you'd have to be worried about filling out seats to repay it and likely run multiple screenings, and you're pretty limited in your selection from the major american distributors, and foreign independent distributors seem like a massive hassle to get in touch with to get a price quote, I never tried.
