I know that the physics of random solid objects like a coke can or a plastic toy would behave like your post says, but clothing items are a bit more complex in their structure.
Yarn are made out of spun fibers
Fibers are woven or knit.
They are much more sensible with regards to elasticity, heat; chemical treatment etc..
Natural fibers based clothing items absolutely DO NOT expand when exposed to hot water. They shrink.
