The phone market is extremely restrained, there's no decent option in smartphones, but it's not like this is true of other industrial items.
Thinkpads, for example, are undeniably more /fa/ than Apple Macbooks. They're a key piece of the ouvre of a more venerated designer (Sapper), tie into the americana workwear revivalism movement by being the distinct emblems of IBM and tech world - but by insightfully pulling it out its comfort zone (going from pre - mid-modern americana to the post-industrial americana of IBM) demonstrating a true understanding of the trend, not empty trend-hopping. Yet they still hit the keynotes of workwear with their functionality even in price.
Thus they're very justified as purchases for those "in the know," while simultaneusly demonstrating a bucking of the mainstream fad for a marketed, artificial "good taste" of Apple, which any pleb can try and hop onto to appear fashionably informed.
Sincere taste and being well informed is /fa/. Caring about specs might not be, but the field of design, placing substance over trend-hopping, and the extended movement of workwear revivalism are.
Apple only has the fashionability of its (pseudo-)functionalism going for it, much like Samsung's phones only has the "appeal" of being counter-current to the iPhone while still decently approximating their quality.
