I basically have to/want to make a new wardrobe from scratch. I want to go full prep, but can't afford $200 shirts from Ralph Lauren or anything like that-- should stick to Oxfords from UNIQLO, for example. Tips? Besides that one picture posted in every prep thread, what are some must-haves in terms of basic pants, shoes, jackets, etc?

Logos like RL aren't important.

Off the top of my head:
>pants
tan
white
navy
gray
burgundy/nantucket red/green/yellow

>shoes
Penny or horsebit loafers, or driving moccasins
white canvas sneakers

>jackets
Waxed cotton, looking like Barbour
yellow rain coat
anorak

>sweater
J. Press shaggy dog

>shorts
white
navy
madras
seersucker

Also always wear crazy socks. It is never okay to match socks to shoes or pants in a non-business fit.

Logos and brands are for end-game things when you've established your style and general understanding of prep. Right now just buy cheap things because you might have a change of heart in the future. Of course you can buy used Brooks Brothers or JPress at much lower cost from ebay or grailed but for now I recommend:

>Shirt $25-$40 (Uniqlo, Gap, Lands End, LLBean):
- Oxfords long sleeves and short sleeves, too
- Madras
- Seersucker
- Linen

Colors to buy: light blue, white, light pink/peach, navy, cream, desaturated colors.

>Pants ~$30-40. Look for mid-high rise and ideally slim legs (Dockers, Lands End, LLBean)
- Flat front chinos with permanent crease
- One pair of Levis 501. Only jeans you need.

>Shoes:
- Penny Loafers are quintessential. Lots of brands to choose but stick with ones that have welted soles. Two cheap brand that are also prep original I know of are Bass (Weejuns), and Sebago.
- Sneakers: keep to minimal. But if you absolutely have to wear a pair, then Keds Champion, Converse 1970s high, or vintage styling tennis shoes like NB Crt300, stan smith, nike blazer low, etc. All whites only of course.

>Jackets are hard to go cheap so buy used or invest
Barbour
LLBean
Lands End
Baracuta Harrington

absolutely match or coordinate your socks to something in your fit other than pants or shoes (white socks are gym tier though)

White socks are Ivy in the proper situation, especially ecru wigwams, I think some anon said earlier, prep/ivy fits are quite sporty.
"My two college-attending male cousins arrived, dressed in very similar outfits. Both were wearing Bass Weejuns, Wigwam wool crew socks, pressed khaki pants with cuff/no break and white Oxford Cloth Button-Down shirts. Both wore Shetland sweaters – the Northwestern cousin a Caramel Tan V-neck and the Cornell cousin a Gray crewneck. I was stunned. Those were the best looking rigs I had EVER seen!"

Merino wool crewnecks.

I'd say shaggy lambswool is more prep, but merino is less itchy and easier to layer with.

Vnecks are either fussy with a tie or louche as a solo layer, and turtlenecks can't be layered with under you go turbo-prep and wear a shirt over one.

shit like eddie bauer, ll bean, woolrich for something cheap, comfy, and easy to match with stuff. not good enough for a Seattle winter

if you need a serious rain jacket, find something like marmot, mountain hardwear, north face, etc second hand.

Rains is cheap. Elka makes nice ones too, but a little more expensive. If you don't like that style, Filson, Fjallraven, Barbour, and others have waxed jackets that can shed a reasonable amount of water, but won't be fully waterproof. If you go that route, buy used and re-wax it yourself.

I don't know about the US, but in europe boatshoes are also an absolute must for preppy.

As for the shirts, you can get ralph lauren shirts for $100, no?

What this guy said, basically, although I'd argue it's more Ivy-core than prepcore.

I'd recommend Sperry CVOs or Tretorn Nylites for the sneakers but white Vans Authentic Originals will work on a budget.

As for polo shirts, you could try Lands' End, though the quality isn't great lately. If you have the money, get Lacoste or J Crew. Nice easy colors are navy and white but you can get them in basically any color you want.

As for pants, J Crew 770s are probably your best balance between quality, cost, and fit. Try to get them on sale or use your university ID for a discount.

Rugby shirts can be fun and they're easy to launder and wear so it could be worth it to pick up one or two from Columbiaknit.

Shorts should be 7" if you're shorter and 8" or 9" if you're very tall, should be a few inches above your knee.

In the US, boat shoes are played out. Kids on my campus wear them with athletic socks and Adidas track pants.

I'd go for the white sneakers or LL Bean Blucher mocs for casual shoes.

Drive to your nearest college town that's home to a state school and enter a consignment shop. Splurge on $8 Ralph Lauren shirts and $15 jackets that retail for $80. You'll find all the fratty brands there. North Face, Patagonia, Ralph Lauren, Carhartt. The works. Chubbies and light pants hang in many sizes (Mostly fat sizes because the fat ones are usually the ones selling clothes for beer money)

I love living in a college town.

Nope. There are some decent items but in general, it's either overpriced, lacking in taste, or both.
