shampoo not too often, condition daily and comb/pick depending on length. Also braids help with growth as well but, when you have braids you can not do anything to your hair besides spray moisturizer on it to avoid a dry scalp if you're prone to having one

It's for the heat. If you grow your hair out your forehead and around your ears gets really hot. That's why sometimes you'll see people with dreads get that cut. It helps keep you cooler in the summer
